The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) seeks as its next Vice Chancellor for Development an experienced executive to provide strategic and operational leadership for philanthropy. Reporting to a new Chancellor, Carol Folt, and in preparation for a comprehensive campaign, the Vice Chancellor will join UNC at an exciting time as the senior leadership, Board of Trustees, and administration embark on the next era in the University's long and storied history.
Now in its third century, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of the select group of institutions forming the Association of American Universities. With more than 29,000 students, UNC-Chapel Hill's academic offerings span more than 100 fields, including bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees. The University has nationally recognized schools of business, dentistry, law, education, government, information and library science, journalism and mass communication, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health, a strong College of Arts and Sciences, and a 28-sport athletic program.
Reporting to Dr. Folt, the Vice Chancellor for Development will work closely with senior academic and administrative leadership, Trustees, staff and key volunteers. The Vice Chancellor will create and execute a fundraising program that reflects industry best practices and contributes to a holistic culture of philanthropy, maximizing the personal and financial engagement of individuals, corporations and foundations with Carolina. He or she will conduct a strategic assessment of existing philanthropic strengths and opportunities, and design a road map for long-term growth and success in development, particularly as the University prepares for its next campaign. To this end, the Vice Chancellor will oversee 83 centrally-based staff and coordinate and guide 196 development staff and 17 foundations based in 26 schools and units across the University. The Vice Chancellor will also create a strong service orientation between the centrally-based development staff and the schools and units, encouraging collaboration and cooperation across the enterprise. He or she will also set a personal example of frontline fundraising success for the entire development team, carrying a select portfolio of donors and prospects and working with the Chancellor, the Provost, Vice Chancellors, Deans, Trustees and others to cultivate and steward transformational gifts to the University.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a Vice Chancellor for Development whose visionary leadership will match his or her strengths in fundraising, team building and personnel management in order to strengthen the University's philanthropic resources. He or she will have a deep appreciation and passion for the mission, goals and culture of the University. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and accomplished individual with at least 15 years of leadership experience in development and campaign management, a comprehensive knowledge of strategies employed in all major development functions, and a track record of significant personal success in donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship at principal gift levels. He or she should possess a demonstrated ability to create engagement and fund-raising strategies tied to a broader institutional vision and educational objectives. The Vice Chancellor must be able to create a results-oriented work environment that promotes collaboration and builds relationships with donors, alumni, volunteers and friends that inspire them to make UNC one of their highest priorities. A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is strongly preferred.
