Basic Qualifications

The vice president must have at least eight years of relevant experience in financial communications and/or related fields including, investor relations, management consulting, media / journalism. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university is required.

Preferred Qualifications
·
  • Proven experience developing, executing and leading strategic communications programs for alternative asset managers, private equity firms, investment banks, broker-dealers, exchanges, institutional trading firms and/or publicly traded financial institutions
  • Demonstrate a diverse financial communications background as a result of being in a senior in-house media relations / communications role or in a similar position within a PR consultancy.
  • Strong experience communicating with a broad array of stakeholders to advance an organizations business and/or products ranging from investors, media, and other partners to regulators, employees and/or other businesses/organizations
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic and entrepreneurial environment that is highly collaborative and team oriented
  • Illustrate a strong desire to help pitch and win new business and lead client account on a day-to-day basis
  • Demonstrate ability to attract, motivate, retain, empower and coach staff, and possess the vision, insight and confidence necessary to manage a team
  • Possess strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills

Competencies

A vice president within Edelman’s New York Financial practice is responsible for leading an account team or group as it relates to client service, staffing, organizational development, and quality control. Expected competencies include:

Strong Financial Communications Experience

  • Create and lead strategic financial communications programs that meet or exceed client objectives
  • Possess strong relationships with top-tier financial print media, broadcast outlets and journalists across a broad array of industry trade publications
  • Robust communications background in institutional financial services, including investment banking, asset / investment management and capital markets
  • Ability to drive public relations strategies around communications relating to special situations, transactions, and litigation / complex regulatory matters
  • Demonstrate advanced writing skills and excellent financial acumen and subject matter expertise across the institutional financial services landscape
  • Craft and develop newsworthy pitches and counsel clients on appropriate media strategies
  • Develop messaging and reactive / proactive communications strategies
  • Demonstrate practical and advanced understanding of visual communications, social media and the digital landscape and how to incorporate these channels into financial communications programs

Client Service
·
  • Serve as the primary or senior contact for clients
  • Develop and oversee account teams’ performance, ensuring quality work is done, efficient processes are in place, and client requests are handled in a timely fashion
  • Use capabilities and resources across Edelman to meet client goals and budgets
  • Formulate thoughtful points of view and recommendations based on broad communications and client landscape
  • Take immediate action upon client feedback and help solve client problems
  • Use qualitative and quantitative research to develop and evaluate client programs

People Engagement

  • Mentor, coach and support all team members
  • Help attract new talent and work to build a team with diverse views and backgrounds
  • Set achievable goals and tasks, delegate opportunities and provide resources for direct reports to meet their goals; consistently measure and recognize goal achievement
  • Oversee quality control of teams’ assignments including writing, pitching, proposals, and reporting
  • Encourage teams to participate in and talk about company-wide initiatives
  • Ensure performance expectations, career development plan and S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and time-based) goals are set and reviewed annually during the formal performance review process
  • Provide ongoing, constructive feedback to staff, consistently hold them accountable, and address under-performance in a timely manner

Business Development

  • Lead and contribute to new business proposals
  • Coordinate and facilitate cross-practice and cross-geographical teams to provide clients and prospects with the most compelling work
  • Seek out business growth opportunities among existing and prospective clients
  • Introduce existing clients to relevant Edelman capabilities, including resources outside of your own group, to advance clients’ business goals
  • Work closely with senior team members to help establish achievable revenue growth targets annually

Financial Planning and Management

  • Understand core financial constructs including revenue, profitability, pricing structures (hourly vs. retainer accounts), utilization, realization, budgeting and forecasting
  • Help negotiate client and vendor contracts and manage client budgeting and authorization process

Leadership

  • Manage conflicts well

  • Advocate and employ cross-practice/office/geography convergence approach to staffing projects

Product Capability and Development

  • Participate in the development and adoption of new products, services, intellectual property and thought leadership materials related to your areas of expertise
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends and demonstrate expert understanding of how they integrate into communications programs
