Visiting Term Instructor/CISA Fellow-in-Residence

The George Mason University, Office of the Provost, Center for International Student Access (CISA) seeks applicants for a full-time, 9-month, Visiting Term Instructor/CISA Fellow-in-Residence position (renewable for a second year) in applied linguistics or English with a specialization in teaching written and spoken communication strategies to graduate-level multilingual speakers of English, to begin in the fall 2011 semester. The candidate will receive a dual appointment to the English Composition or the Graduate School of Education. Two-course teaching load per semester, plus research and administrative responsibilities with benefits. There will be an option to teach courses or develop projects during the summer term for an additional compensation.

The Fellow will be primarily affiliated with the center’s BRIDGE program as a researcher and consultant to help develop integrated linguistic skill instruction for international graduate students. One half of the position will be to co-teach graduate-level communication courses (written and spoken). One half of the position will be to work with faculty from CISA, English Composition, English Language Institute, and Writing Across the Curriculum to research and expand sustainable resources to support writing and language development for graduate degree-seeking multilingual speakers of English. The primary tasks include (1) developing resources for English language learners to become aware of linguistic and rhetorical strategies for composing texts in U.S. scholarly genres within the disciplines, (2) evaluating and developing research initiatives related to this area, and (3) participating on committees relevant to the position.

M.A. required; ABD or Ph.D. preferred. Doctoral students already conducting research in a related field are encouraged to apply. One graduate degree must be in English, linguistics,bilingual education, teaching English as a second language, or a related field. Candidates must have experience teaching grammar/linguistics or similar courses at the university-level. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated research interest and curriculum development experience in both applied linguistics/TESL, and composition and rhetoric/writing in the disciplines.
