To be a Volunteer at St. Alexius Medical Center one must: * Be at least 16 years of age (Those 13-15 may apply to join the Candy Stripers.) * Complete a volunteer application, complete with three references * Participate in an interview * Verify immunization * Submit to a tuberculosis test * Participate in volunteer orientation * Commit to 50 hours or six months of service Patient and Visitor Services Volunteer Opportunities Mail Deliverer: Bring cheer to patients by delivering their personal mail. 1-2 hours each shift. Saturday volunteers and subs needed. Flower Deliverer: Light up patient's rooms with a bouquet of color and get-well wishes. Must be friendly and comfortable pushing a large cart weighted down with bouquets throughout the medical center. Delivery occurs between 12:30pm and 2:00pm, Monday through Saturday. Hospice Flower Deliverer: Brighten the homes and lives of those who are home-bound and extremely ill by delivering flowers to their doorstep. Volunteers pick up the flowers from local florists, arrange the bouquets, and then deliver the flowers to homes of Hospice patients. Must have reliable transportation, compassion, and a little creative flair. Deliveries occur Tuesday afternoons each week. Escort: Accompany visitors and patients to their destinations within the medical center. Must be friendly, energetic, with a good sense of direction, able to push a wheelchair, and able to be on the move for long periods of time. Escorts needed in Admitting weekdays between 6:30 am and 4 pm. Discharge Escort: Assist patients who have been discharged, escorting them to their rides home and wishing them well on behalf of St. Alexius. Must be friendly, energetic, with a good sense of direction, able to push a wheelchair, and able to be on the move for long periods of time. Escorts needed mid-to-late mornings weekdays and late afternoons throughout the week. Waiting Room Host: Keep the families informed and comfortable as they wait to see their loved ones. Must be compassionate, calm in stressful situations, and a good listener. Volunteers need in the Surgical Waiting Room between 7 am and 4pm. Volunteers need in the ICU Waiting Room between 9:30 am and 3:30pm. Hospice Companion: Visit Hospice and home-bound patients. Talk, play cards, be a friend. Must enjoy visiting with people, calm and compassionate in emotional situations, willing to complete reports about visits, and have reliable transportation. Volunteers give 2 to 3 hours per week when assigned to a patient in the volunteer's local community. Administrative and Clerical Volunteer Opportunities: Medical Library Clerk: Assist the Medical Librarian in the organization of library resources, as well as assist visitors to the Medical Library with their basic questions. Must be detail-oriented, organized, comfortable with basic office equipment, and able to sit or stand for long periods. Computer literacy is a plus but not required. 3-4 hours shifts weekly, Mondays through Friday. Specialty Clinics Medical Records Clerk: Increase the efficiency of a clinic by puling requested charts from the medical records shelves, delivering charts to medical staff, filing dictation notes, and refiling charts. Must be comfortable with constant physical activity, bending, walking, standing, discrete with sensitive information, detailed, and able to file accurately. Hospice Clerk: Assist Hospice and Home Health (HHH) staff with clerical tasks, so that HHH staff can spend more time in direct service to patients. Must be friendly, pleasant, courteous, organized and detailed, comfortable in an office environment and with basic office equipment, with good telephone communication skills, calm and compassionate in emotional situations. Volunteers needed weekdays between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm. General Support Volunteer Opportunities Alex the Cat: Make their day with a hug or wave from Alex, St. Alexius Medical Center mascot. Alex visits patients, both young and old, as well as attends community events. Volunteers must be willing to wear a costume which includes a large head (one size truly fits all), like to be a little zany, and enjoy bringing smiles to people's faces. Volunteers needed for special events, as well as for late afternoon visits to patient areas in the medical center. Gift Shop Attendant: Staff the medical center gift shop, assisting customers and ringing up purchases. Must be friendly, pleasant, courteous, able to make change accurately, physically able to restock and to dust shelves, comfortable with using a simple cash register or willing to learn. Gift Shop Attendants must join the Medical Center Auxiliary which has annual dues of $2.00. Volunteers needed for morning, afternoon, and evening shifts on weekdays, and for afternoon shifts on weekends.
