THE APPLICANT MUST :
  • Have been or currently is a client of a WIC program
  • Have breastfed at least one baby exclusively for six months or longer (does not have to be currently breastfeeding)
  • Be enthusiastic about breastfeeding, and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Have written and verbal fluency in the language posted and English language
Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Nature of Work:

A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Under the direction and supervision of the Senior Nutrition Specialist performs related work as required.

Examples of Work:
  • Assists parents in accessing needed breastfeeding resources
  • Provides positive reinforcement and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor
  • Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone at scheduled intervals determined by the WIC Program
  • May counsel women in the WIC clinic
  • Receives a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned
  • Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. Also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns
  • Is available outside usual 8 to 5 working hours to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems
  • Respects each client by keeping her information strictly confidential
  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC client
  • Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to:
    • Designated WIC Senior Nutrition Specialist or Nutrition Specialist
    • Lactation consultant
    • The mother’s physician or nurse
    • Public health programs in the community Social service agencies
  • Attends bi-monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate
  • Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor
  • May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to possess good listening skills. Must be able to use these skills for primarily telephone based program
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of personal situations
  • Ability to be non-judgmental and accepting of others and able to exercise tact and good judgment in working with children and adults
  • Ability to establish a good working relationship with children, adults, other peers and WIC staff
  • Ability to accept and utilize supervision
  • Ability to retain confidentiality
  • Ability to work with people of diverse economic, culture and social backgrounds
  • Ability of written and verbal fluency in the language posted and the English language
In compliance w/ the Americans with Disabilities Act the following represents the Physical/Environmental Demands: This position requires a majority of time (up to 70%) spent walking and sitting. Some standing is required and objects of usually no more than ten (10) pounds need to be lifted, carried or pushed. Adverse movements such as stooping, kneeling or crouching are often required. Simultaneous/repetitive use of both hands is required for writing and data entry. Excellent sensory skills are important (sight, hearing and speech) as well as ability to communicate effectively.
