As a member of the classroom technology and facilities group (CTF), the audiovisual technician has responsibilities in all areas of classroom technology at the Weatherhead School’s Peter B. Lewis campus, including the Lewis Building and Dively Building. He/she carries out the day-to-day operations of classroom audiovisual and setup needs to support academic courses and events and videotaping/photography of courses/events as needed. Duties include instructing faculty, staff and presenters in the operation of the systems, classroom setup, and phone support. This person performs other duties, as required, in order to provide first-class service to CTF’s user community of Weatherhead faculty, clients, staff and students. This includes all setup and tear down responsibilities for scheduled classes, events and other activities as determined. This person is expected to carry out all duties under broad directives and with limited supervision. They should be a self-starter who is capable of working independently to accomplish the stated objectives. Position includes working some Saturdays and overtime (on a rotational basis with other CTF staff).

This position reports to the assistant manager, classroom technology and facilities and managing director of business services and works directly with other CTF staff members in carrying out his/her responsibilities.


1. Provide technical and set-up support to end-users, especially in the areas of computer projection, videotaping and audio system setups and recordings.

2. Operate distance learning production and transmission equipment and equipment for streaming media and archival recording.

3. Set up audiovisual systems and in-room equipment for special functions as specified and/or detailed by senior technician(s) and assistant manager.

4. Provide first-line technical support with assistance as necessary from the help desk, for Weatherhead faculty, staff, and students with problems relating to usage of audiovisual equipment in these classrooms and other rooms with permanent or portable audiovisual equipment.

5. Serve as point of contact for the CTF team with client departments, faculty and staff.

6. Provide technical and operational support for all the classrooms, videoconferencing systems, streaming media systems, media retrieval systems and other audiovisual systems as required.

7. Provide technical and operational setup support for the Weatherhead School.

8. See that all equipment is kept in good working order by properly handling, using and storing of equipment.

9. Assist as needed in the on-going maintenance activities to maintain proper adjustment of video and audio parameters for optimum operation and to replace perishable components.

10. Follow standards and practices for the distribution and maintenance of portable equipment.

11. Ensure that all equipment and systems are in proper working condition and communicate any necessary repairs to the CTF team.

12. Ensure that all event setup equipment is kept cleaned and maintained.

13. Assist the CTF assistant manager in devising procedures to facilitate ease of use of audiovisual equipment, keeping in mind the great variability in the format and character of presentations and the differing technical backgrounds of the presenters.

14. Participate in providing instruction and direction to student employees related to tasks to achieve first-class support of all activities of the department.

15. Maintain and complete all required documentation.

16. Maintain and complete audiovisual help desk logs.

17. Communicate all issues and communications related to equipment or support to assistant manager.

18. Complete university time sheet on a weekly basis.

19. Provide photography, videotaping, encoding and conversion and editing services as requested.


1. Assist as needed with other special projects.

2. Work with classroom technology assistant manager and other CTF staff on product evaluations.

3. Provide direction to students and/or free-lance operators as assigned by assistant manager or senior technician.


Department: Daily contact with WSOM faculty, classroom technology and facilities staff including student workers, WSOM general staff.

University: Periodic contact with faculty/staff from other departments utilizing WSOM equipment and facilities and from time to time will collaborate with university media vision staff on special projects/events.

External: Weekly and sometimes daily contact with WSOM executive education clients (includes first to senior level managers from external corporations). Periodic contact with free-lance videographers, and equipment manufacturers and vendors.

Students: Daily contact with CTF student workers, WSOM/CWRU graduate and undergraduate students.


No direct supervisory responsibility, but may direct the work of student workers on specific projects.


Experience: A minimum of 2 years work experience in a customer service-oriented technical position and basic computer skills is required. Work experience or seminar training or other course work related to AV technology is preferred. Experience in the operation of audio, video, audio-visual, telecommunications, videoconferencing CODECS, control systems is a plus. Experience in interacting with diverse groups of users, such as faculty and students, is highly desired. Experience at handling complaints appropriately and exposure to customer service issues is a must for the position.

Education/Licensing: High school degree is required. Additional education, seminar training or other course work related to audiovisual technology or customer service is preferred.

15. Good sense of humor.

16. Must be able to lift 75 pounds and comfortable in climbing ladders for installation, adjustments and repairs of audiovisual equipment.

17. Willingness to keep up with technology advances through reading, continuing education and seminars so he/she remains knowledgeable in all matters relating to our audiovisual equipment and services.

18. Ability and willingness, through self study, to obtain familiarity in the operation of specific audiovisual hardware and software components, Ad Astra, and Google applications.

19. Some experience with videotaping, photography preferred.

20. Knowledge of lighting and light kits is a plus.

21. Working knowledge of computer operating systems and applications, particularly the Windows XP and Windows 7 environment, networks, web applications, and presentation packages.


The CTF group provides state-of-the-art audio-visual support for the Weatherhead School of Management's environment of approximately 1800 faculty, staff, and students. The audio-visual systems include multimedia, distance learning, and computer classrooms linked to a central media operations center. CTF is a fast action, highly technical and humanly diverse entity that performs a vital role for the school. There is no latitude for a lack of service to our clients. He/she is expected to demonstrate professionalism and maturity on the job at all times.

Must be willing to work evenings and weekend hours on rotation and as the situation warrants.
