Function:
To teach and administer the school in a manner that increases student performance in all academic areas through a team approach.

Certification Required:
Alaska Type A Secondary Certification.

Minimum of three years teaching experience.

Fifteen graduate credits preferred .

Alaska Type B Principal Certification preferred.

Administrative Duties:
1. Analyze data to assist the staff in making instructional decisions.

2. Supervise and evaluate staff.

3. Hire classified staff.

4. Effectively communicate with students, staff, parents and community.

5. Maintain a safe building to include a productive school atmosphere.

6. Submit required paperwork and budgets in a timely manner.

7. Assist the community school advisory committee in setting school goals during monthly meetings.

8. Other duties as assigned.

Teaching Duties:
1. Prepare daily lesson plans aligned to the District's curriculum.

2. Maintain accurate student records.

3. Plan and implement learning activities as per the AGSD Board approved curriculum.

4. Assess and evaluate students on a daily, weekly, quarterly, and annual basis using District approved methods and instruments.

5. Comply with all state and federal laws regarding the instruction and supervision of children by certificated employees.

6. Supervise classroom paraprofessional aides assigned to his/her classroom.

7. Maintain a professional manner and decorum.

8. Meet with parents during parent-teacher conferences and as necessary to maintain achievement and student discipline.

9. Comply with and carry out the school discipline policy.

10. Maintain open communication and involvement with the students' families and community.

11. Collaborate with other professional staff members to meet student needs and to implement the goals of the school and district.

12. Keep abreast of current and emerging educational research, trends and pedagogical techniques.

13. Maintain a safe and secure environment for all students.

14. Use a balance of cooperative learning, individualized project-related and textbook instructional practices.

Alaska Gateway School District:
AGSD encompasses 28,000 square miles extending north from the Alaska Range to the Yukon River and Canadian border. Schools are located in the communities of Dot Lake, Eagle, Tanacross, Tetlin, Tok, Mentasta Lake, and Northway. There is also a statewide correspondence school, preschools located in villages or within schools and Gateway Ready Programs. All schools are K-12 except Tanacross, which is K-8.

AGSD services approximately 400 students in seven communities. Distances between the Central Office in Tok and outlying schools range from 12 to 173 miles. All schools are on the road system. Eagle is a fly-in site for seven months of the year.

The district is located in the eastern interior of Alaska with extreme weather conditions. The average low temperature in January is -32 degrees; the average high during July is 72 degrees. The region abounds with wildlife including moose, caribou, bear, Dahl sheep, arctic hare, fox and coyote. Canada geese, swans, cranes and ducks and a variety of fish make use of the ponds and lakes in the area.
