General Description of Duties : Under supervision from the Manager or Recreation Supervisor, p lan, prepare, and teach American Red Cross swim lessons. Swim lessons will include the six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics, the two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics, as well as Adult swim classes and private one-on-one instruction. Swim instructor must be able to perform all related duties as assigned including, but not limited to: Enforce water safety rules and regulations. S upervise & ensure the safety of class participants during program. Develop adequate, progressive lesson plans. E xplain & demonstrate proper swimming techniques. Teach & encourage participants in the acquisition of new aquatics skills & swimming strokes. Observe swimming and diving skills, accurately classify and suggest appropriate interventions to improve them. Modify teaching to meet unexpected challenges. Ensure facility is clean and an appropriate teaching environment. Demonstrate the ability to accommodate participants with disabilities and other health conditions. Evaluate participant skill levels and report and document course participant progress. C omplete and submit American Red Cross paperwork.
Applicant must possess excellent public relations and interpersonal skills; good verbal and written communication skills. Applicant must be proficient in first aid and CPR/AED skills. Possession of and/or willingness to attain additional certifications and perform in the capacities allowed by them such as lifeguard, swim coach and water exercise instructor preferred. Applicant must possess aquatic specialization certifications including Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Red Cross Standard First Aid Certification or equivalent, Red Cross CPR/AED or equivalent. Cash handling skills and computer skills are required in order to process program registrations for patrons.

Typical Qualifications:

Minimum Training And Experience : Applicant must be sixteen (16) years of age or greater. Previous Water Safety Instructor experience or one year related college coursework, supplemented by six (6) months previous experience demonstrating knowledge, skills, or abilities as outlined herein preferred. Applicant must demonstrate the ability to fulfill the physical demands of the assigned work in the form of a physical aptitude swim test and provide an equivalent combination of education, training and experience at time of hire. Current Water Safety Instructor, Standard First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications also required at time of hire.

ADA COMPLIANCE: Physical Ability : Tasks may involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors : Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, and/or toxic/poisonous agents, depending on area of assignment.
