Job Overview: Employees in this position are responsible for the care and welfare of pigs in the first 6 weeks after weaning. They will ensure proper early pig care through the implementation and execution of standard operating procedures, maintenance of accurate activity records, and promotion of animal well being during this time period. These employees could be working on company managed farms, production partner farms, or both.

Job Duties & Accountabilities

Typical Duties of an Early Pig Care Specialist, Wean-to-Market include:
  • Handle animals with care and respect at all times.
  • Commit to being the best team member and individual that they can be.
  • Promotion of safe working environment and reporting of all work related injuries.
  • Execution of all wean pig placement protocols including:
    • Unloading of animals and placing in proper pens.
    • Counting and Grading of animals.
    • Sorting and proper placement of all high risk animals.
    • Completion of all record keeping required in establishing accurate on farm inventories.
  • Implement the standard operating procedures (SOP’s) associated with early pig care, the first six weeks after weaning, to the best of their ability. These include, but are not limited to:
  • Implement and execute individual pig care and treatment.
  • Implement and execute all wean pig start up feeding practices.
  • Monitoring and maintaining proper temperature and ventilation rates.
  • Sort animals according to body condition.
  • Sort, relocate, and administer proper care of “fall behind” pig
  • Removal of dead animals from pens and documentation.
  • Using pharmaceutical (medication) and biological products (vaccines).
  • Daily record keeping.
  • Perform timely duties and comply with practices that promote the health of the animals under their care (commonly referred to as bio-security practices). These activities include, but are limited to:
  • Changing footwear and clothing, and showering as required.
  • Observation of SOPs for transportation of livestock supplies and feed.
  • Isolation of disease areas and dead animal removal according to standardized protocol.
  • Restriction of travel patterns and adhering to “down-time” requirements.
  • Properly communicate with other caretakers and or production partners to ensure good teamwork and customer service.
  • Train and teach Early Pig Care protocols to other Production Technicians, Production Partners, and Independent Contractors as needed.
Minimum Qualifications: PQA and TQA Certifications.

Education:

High School Diploma or GED

Experience

    • Effective communication skills
    • Highly proficient in implementation and execution of early pig care protocols.
    • High proficient in training and teaching using the four steps of adult learning.
