Youth Leaders work directly with an assigned class of approximately 20 students, providing assistance, academic support and enrichment classes. Youth leaders’ ability to establish authority through leadership, communication, and most importantly patience, is critical to success.

The Youth Leader is an unclassified position. Youth Leader jobs are not subject to the Merit System guidelines . Youth Leaders are not entitled to medical benefits or vacation pay. Youth Leaders are not assigned to a barganing unit and are considered at-will employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS:

•High School Diploma or GED required

•48 semester college units or 60 quarter college units preferred-- Unit/Degree verification (including equivalency of foreign degrees) must be submitted with the online application as an attachment in the form of unofficial or official transcripts. Equivalence of foreign degrees must have been reviewed and verified by a regionally accredited foreign degrees review agency or passing the district level Instructional Aide Exam.

•Must pass Live Scan (criminal background check via fingerprinting)

•TB Test

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities of this class include but are not limited to:
•Commit to a full-year program with excellent attendance

•Create engaging academic and enrichment activities/lessons

•Serve as a positive adult role model for children by displaying appropriate dress, speech, work ethic and attitude

•Record and maintain daily attendance and other documentation as required

•Ensure that classrooms and program space are clean, organized and safe

•Create an engaging environment that fosters a sense of belonging that kids want to be in

•Use positive behavior and classroom management techniques with children

•Communicate and work effectively with students, staff, parents, school personnel, and community partners

•Attend and actively participate in all required staff development workshops, meetings and trainings

•Provide homework assistance, academic enrichment and physical activity

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
•Time management, planning, and organizational skills

•Excellent communication skills (Written and Verbal)

ABILITY TO :
•Influence and motivate others

•Follow directions, but to take initiative when necessary

•Speak and write Standard English appropriate in a public school setting

•Work with diverse ethnic, gender, age and cultural groups.

ENVIRONMENT:
School Site (indoor and outdoor) and Classroom Environment.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Monitoring student behavior during program activities, assisting students with homework, hearing and speaking to provide instruction, directing program activities, bending at the waist, kneeling, standing and walking for extended periods of time.
