Job Description:
SUMMARY
Supervises and coordinates activities of train crew
engaged in railroad operations, switching railroad cars
within yard of railroad, industrial plant, or similar
location to facilitate loading or unloading of cars or
making up and breaking up of trains; and/or switches
railroad cars within yard of railroad, industrial plant,
or similar location to load and unload cars or to make
up or break up trains in a safe and efficient manner, by
performing the following duties.
ORGANIZATION EXPECTATION OF EMPLOYEE

Trainmaster about train crew activities

perform duties of the position
  • Meets railroad productivity standards
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the
following. Other duties may be assigned as needed by
management.
  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of train
crews.
  • Receives oral or written instructions from Manager
or Customer indicating which cars are to be
switched.
  • Notifies engineer of switching orders and, whereby,
which cars are to be moved to specified locations of
yard, using radio, telephone, verbal or hand
signals. Gives instructions to throw track switches
and to couple and uncouple cars.

Must ensure daily train lists are accurate as
generated by the customer service department, and
accurate as completed by the train crews within his/her
territory. Must ensure all reporting is done accurately
and timely, including daily crew work sheets and weekly
operational reporting. Initiate and provide
an accurate, complete, and timely investigation of all
accidents and incidents, including causes, remedial
action, and recommended solutions.

Job Requirements:Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • At least 1 year experience as yardmaster/dispatcher
Knowledge of and skills in applying basic federal
railroad regulations, guidelines and rules.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules,
procedure and safety manuals, government
regulations, operating and maintenance instructions,
memos and other work-related information.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry
out instructions furnished in written, oral,
diagrammatic, or schedule form; and/or to apply
principles of logic to define problems, collect
data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions;
and/or to apply principles of rational systems to
solve practical problems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate instructions,
directions, processes, procedures, safety rules and
regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others
in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form.
  • Ability to train switch crews and other yard
personnel to perform job-related duties; and to
provide training related to federal and company
regulations, rules, safety guidelines and preventive
maintenance.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of Air Brake & Train
Handling Rules, Core Safety Rules, as well as
General Code of Operating Rules and be willing to
enforce those rules in day to day operations.
  • Ability to make independent judgments using sound
reasoning skills and knowledge base.
  • Ability to think and act quickly in responding to
emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to talk to and effectively communicate with
co-workers, yard personnel, switching crew,
engineers, railroad officials and others in a clear,
concise, courteous, efficient and professional
manner.
  • Ability to pass training and required testing.

May supervises multiple train crews and is responsible
for training and qualifications for all train crew
employees.
QUALIFICATIONS

CERTIFICATIONS
Perferred to hold, a current locomotive engineers and
conductors certification
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school education or general education development
(GED), and minimum of 6 months job-related experience;
or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety
rules, operating, and maintenance instructions, and
procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and
correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before
corporate clients or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all
units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions,
and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and
percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out
instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram
form. Ability to deal with problems involving several
concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to talk and/or hear well enough to
communicate with co-workers, engineers, train crew, yard
crew, and customers 100% of time.
Must be able to climb and balance well enough to climb,
hold onto, and balance on ladder attached to side of
car; and/or climb ladder attached to side of car and
balance on top of car while turning brakewheel; and/or
climb steps on locomotive from level or uneven ground;
and/or climb on/off moving equipment 35% of time.
Must be able to stand and walk on level or uneven ground
70% of time.
Must be able to bend, twist, stoop 10% of time.
Must be able to push, pull, and/or lift, exerting up to
100 pounds of force, 10% of time.
Must be able to sit in cab of locomotive 20% of time.
Must be able to reach with hands and arms; and/or use
hands to feel or handle 60% of time.
Must be able to write legibly and use radio and
communication equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger,
handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The
employee frequently is required to climb or balance and
stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is required
to exert up to 125 pounds of force occasionally; and/or
up to 100 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 75
pounds of force regularly. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance
vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and ability to adjust focus.
