Summer Program: June 1 - August 7, 2013

The Youth leader position acts as a mentor, and supervises groups of approximately 15 ‐ 20 children in an academic, recreational, and/or enrichment settings. The Youth Leader ensures the safety of the students while assisting in the development of and following a program plan which may occur during summer camp, after school, and occasionally on weekends. Depending on the program, a Youth Leader may lead a project, activity, or tutor students in advanced academic subjects.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead a group of assigned students in an academic, recreational, and/or enrichment activity
  • Ensure the supervision and safety of assigned students at all times during program hours
  • Provide small‐group tutoring and/or homework assistance in a variety of subjects which may include an advanced academic subject
  • Implement age appropriate lesson plans and activities that engage all participants and adapt activities as needed
  • Ensure program requirements are met on a daily basis such as checking students in/out on a Daily Attendance Roster
  • Preparation and distribution of healthy snacks or meals
  • Assist in the development of age appropriate program activities
  • Attend required trainings
  • Participate in and cooperate with group decisions
  • Teach and instruct in Spanish and English
  • Keep students engaged by modeling desired behavior and actions
  • Promote and model healthy habits, proper hygiene, and physical activity
  • Promote and encourage literacy by reading with students
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment by keeping the youth classrooms clean and organized, cleaning the facility and toys as necessary, and removing physical hazards in the classrooms or on the courtyard or EBS facilities
  • Understand and implement emergency procedures in case of fire, tornadoes, or other emergencies. When necessary, administer First-Aid/CPR
  • Report safety and health issues immediately to supervisor or maintenance
  • Supervise interactions with students and volunteers
  • Supervise, assist and assign tasks to volunteers
  • Greet and assist all parents during drop off and pick up
  • Help resolve conflicts with parents

Additional Requirements:

  • Assist with student registration, placement examinations, and test scoring
  • Assist in maintaining and preparing student records as well as class attendance, registration and report cards for each individual student
  • Responsible for recording the money transactions received for registration, book purchases and other monetary services, following the money management policy and procedures
  • Maintain and update files, databases, attendance logs, records, and other documents
  • Assist and support the Education Department
  • Maintain open communication with volunteers for program and personal feedback and to make special announcements throughout the semester
  • Clean and maintain equipment and facility
  • The youth leader may come in contact with children who are ill and/or contagious, and must take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff and themselves.

Skills Abilities and Other requirements:

  • Enjoys working with children
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity working with our clients and Spanish-speakers
  • Bilingual in English Spanish required
  • Must maintain Food Handlers certification
  • The ability to manage a variety of tasks at a given time, while maintaining the attention to detail
  • Proven communication skills
  • Strong writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; strong interpersonal & organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments
  • Demonstrate professionalism and positive work ethics
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and document creation software such as Adobe Acrobat and Databases are required

Education:

  • High School Senior or College student

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience working with children in a group setting

Working Conditions: Special job or environmental conditions and physical requirements
Caring for children can be physically demanding.

  • Lifting and carrying children and equipment
  • Frequent sitting on the floor and/or child-sized furniture
  • Ability to work in a busy and noisy environment
  • May experience smells associated with toileting and children who are ill
  • Exposure to contagious illnesses
  • Must have a flexible schedule; work split shifts, weekends and early mornings as required
