Regular, Part-Time (60% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Zero-Waste Biofuels, located at the United States Department of Agriculture/Agriculture Research Service (USDA-ARS), Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center (PBARC) in the Tropical Plant Genetics Resource and Disease Research Unit in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES: Responsible for designing and conducting experiments for growing, harvesting, and extracting oil from algae and/or fungi using efficient protocols. Sets up and maintains equipment including bioreactors, and develops and carries out efficient protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for a quality analysis lab. Provides growth and oil quality and quantity analyses for algal and/or fungal samples. Collects, manages data, performs statistical analyses of results using SAS or other tools and writes research reports. Computerizes results from analyses and files research reports.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology or related field. EXPERIENCE: Five to seven (5-7) years of scientific research experience, or equivalent combination of training/experience. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Basic microbiology, microscopy and molecular techniques. Must be able to design and conduct hypothesis driven research experiments. Must be able to culture, isolate, identify, and characterize a variety of microbes including algae and/or fungi using classical microbiology methods, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microscopy techniques. Must be able to prepare culture media and reagents, and determine the population of microorganisms. Must be able to utilize aseptic techniques, inoculate and monitor experimental bioreactors. Must be able to perform PCR and utilize statistical analysis tools such as SAS.
