The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is looking for highly motivated, personable individuals with strong leadership skills and innovative ideas to become part of a dynamic team of employees with a strong commitment to providing excellent service to our diverse community and the animal collection at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. A Zoo Keeper performs work involving the care of zoo animals and maintenance of cages, enclosures, grounds and service areas. The incumbent prepares diets for the animal collection; performs maintenance tasks for animal enclosures, holding and service areas; works with animal collection in preparation for presentations, capture and restraint, basic husbandry, and behavioral enrichment; and responds to general questions from the public regarding zoo animals. The work schedule includes weekdays, weekends and holidays as assigned. Part-time un-benefited positions are being recruited for at this time; however, all candidates interested in employment in this classification are encouraged to submit their applications for consideration, as additional opportunities may utilize the applicants from this recruitment.

These positions are part-time un-benefited, with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to the following:

1. Education: Completion of high school or equivalent General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

2. Experience: One year of experience in the care of non-domestic animals.

3. Acceptable Substitutions: Successful completion of one year of course work from an accredited college or university in Biology, Zoology, Zoo Keeping, Animal Training and Management or closely related field can be substituted for the required one year of experience.

4. Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a Valid California Driver's License may be required.

5. Employment Eligibility: Federal law requires all employees to provide verification of their eligibility to work in this country. Please be informed that the City of San Jose will not prepare or file a labor condition application with the Dept. of Labor.

Background Check: Candidates will be required to undergo a background check, including a criminal history records check, before being considered for a position.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the essential physical functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by City of San Jose Employee Health Services. State law requires all employees to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last two years.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the most desirable combination of training, skills and experience, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable experience, knowledge and skills for this position include:

-Knowledge of specialized care techniques unique to exotic animals and typical of zoo collection animals.
-Knowledge of modern zoo operating practices and principles, including safety principles for working with non-domestic animals as they pertain to zoo exhibits and performance of animal husbandry tasks.
-Ability to enter animal areas and perform physical work (including lifting objects up to 50 lbs.) under all climatic conditions.
-Knowledge of principles and practices of volunteer leadership.
-Able to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends, nights and holidays.
-Experience performing and/or assisting with basic veterinary procedures and knowledge in specialized animal care programs.
-Ability to work well with others, effectively communicate and interact with the public; express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
-Ability to perform basic construction and maintenance of animal habitats and displays, including plant maintenance.
