ROLE PURPOSE
Lead Engineer/Architect responsible for configuration and delivery of Novartis' Virtualization service, which includes operational delivery of the Vblock technology to 50+ sites globally.

Act as the lead technical engineer/Architect for the definition of virtualization services based out of the Global Data Centers, Manufacturing sites and local facilities.

Coordinate with operational support lead to ensure implementation details are transferred to operations staff.

Responsible for lifecycle management of the Virtualization platform.

Consult with and make recommendations to Architecture Team, Service Manager, and Project Teams deploying applications on the Novartis VMWare environment.

Designs server, network, and storage architecture for large scale cloud infrastructure and application services.

Technical contributor to the development of the virtualization strategy for Novartis

Improve, track progress, and make recommendations on Infrastructure Improvements, imaging, and new releases.

Responsible for Level 3 support for all VMWare related issues.

Assist in Level 2 support responsibilities and help train lower level engineers. MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
Develop a strong customer relationship that ensures GIS (Global Information Services) group becomes a trusted advisor for our division's executives.

Coordinate with Quality Managers to ensure that all required processes and procedures are followed and deviations/exception are documented properly.

Provide technical expertise for planning and defining upgrade requirements: perform feasibility and performance studies including benchmark, capacity planning, and sizing of server architecture. Collaborate with other departments within Novartis to ensure high customer satisfaction and resolve customer issues in a timely fashion. Create new system recommendations to meet user needs, including the system configurations and installation planning.

Provide technical recommendations regarding Cloud computing: specifically automation, self-service portal and charge back.

Report major outages, service interruptions, and service failures to the user community and assist in the analysis of the interruptions when they occur.

Manage Security rights and privileges to ensure access control is configured to maximize resource output while maintaining the best level of security possible.

Provide technical leadership to VMware professional services consulting project teams, which will include project work at customer sites

Maintain current knowledge of the entire VMware product line.

Assist in the development of standard reusable VMware 'productized' consulting service offerings, including definition of tasks, deliverables and standard estimates KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Achieve agreed targets in terms of quality, time and cost.

Ensure operational stability

Implement strategies to allow ongoing operational upgrades and ever-greening of technical solutions

Ensure that the system remains qualified and that all new processes go through a proper vetting as determined by quality management.

Adhere to VCE (VMWare/Cisco/EMC) best practices whenever possible to ensure operational integrity.

Train and assist in directing lower technical resources to promote positive resource usage. JOB DIMENSION
Capable of taking technical lead role for category A and B projects with more than 4 indirect reports.

Capable of managing projects related to Novartis' operational VBlock environment (< $3m) with either local or global scope.

Ability to collaborate with resources from GIS and the Novartis business lines, acting as subject matter expert for cloud based computing.

Ensure Novartis VBlock Infrastructure operations are aligned with strategies of GIS to ensure support for the future technology roadmap. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
University working and thinking level, degree in computer science or comparable education / experience

VMware Certified Professional 4 or 5

Cloud (VCP-Cloud) - preferred

Technical Architect familiar with VMware vSphere® best practices

Experience in a highly regulated IT Environment.

Implementation experience with VMware vCloud Director (VCD), Automation tools, self-service portal and charge back.

10+ years of relevant experience

Experience with modern software development methodologies, with emphasis on software and hardware architecture, and infrastructure design and development

At least 3 years experience in infrastructure architecture and design of complex distributed systems environments, including failover techniques, recovery/rollback, and application partitioning

At least 2 years experience in a technical lead role for small- or medium-size teams

Strong practical Linux or Windows Server systems administration skills

Basic knowledge of Service Management (ITIL) through experience or certification.

Excellent Communication Skills

Proven capability and experience in leading projects and resources

English (written and spoken) required
