EOG Resources' geography is determined by where it can locate primary energy resources -- natural gas, natural gas liquids, and oil. The independent oil and gas company is engaged in exploring for natural gas and crude oil and developing, producing, and marketing those resources. In 2011, EOG's total estimated net proved reserves were 2.05 billion barrels of oil equivalent, of which 517 million barrels were crude oil and condensate reserves, 228 million barrels were natural gas liquids reserves and 7,851 billion cubic feet (or 1.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent) were natural gas reserves.
EOG Resources is developing major shale plays in North America -- the Eagle Ford Shale and Barnett Shale in Texas and the Bakken Formation in North Dakota. EOG also has operations in Canada, offshore Trinidad, the UK North Sea and East Irish Sea, the China Sichuan Basin and the Neuquén Basin of Argentina.
In 2011 EOG's revenue increased by 66% thanks to a 92% rise in crude oil and condensate revenues primarily due to an increase in wellhead crude oil and condensate deliveries as a result of stronger production in Texas and Colorado; a 69% increase in natural gas liquids revenue due to a jump in natural gas liquids deliveries and a higher average price as a result of increased volumes in the Fort Worth Basin Barnett Shale, the Eagle Ford Shale, and the Rocky Mountain area; and a more than 132% increase in gathering, processing, and marketing revenues due to a surge in crude oil marketing activities.
Net income spiked by 579% in 2011 thanks to strong revenue growth and a decrease in exploration costs due to lower geological and geophysical expenditures in the US.
EOG's strategy is to focus on organic growth of its North American shale plays and through strategic acquisitions of properties in North America and internationally.
EOG announced significant oil finds in Texas, North Dakota, and Colorado in 2011 and targeted double-digit growth in its organic production through 2012. In 2011 EOG was the largest oil producer in the Eagle Ford shale play in Texas where its net production was 30,200 barrels per day of crude oil and condensate, 3,900 barrels per day of natural gas liquids and 21 million cubic feet per day of natural gas.
Expanding its energy portfolio, in 2010 EOG Resources Canada acquired Galveston LNG for $210 million, giving it a 24.5% stake in Pacific Trail Pipelines Limited Partnership and a 49% share of Kitimat LNG, a planned liquefied natural gas export terminal in British Columbia.
Moving into a new exploration area, in 2010 EOG acquired rights from ConocoPhillips in a Petroleum Contract covering the Chuanzhong Block exploration area in China's Sichuan Basin. In 2011 the company held 131,000 net acres in China.more »

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) may be a giant in transition, but its still a pharmaceutical giant. The company's blockbuster cardiovascular lineup includes heart disease drug Plavix and Avapro for hypertension. BMS also makes antipsychotic medication Abilify and HIV treatments Reyataz and Sustiva. Most of its sales come from products in the therapeutic areas of cardiovascular care, immunoscience, metabolics, neuroscience, oncology, and virology. BMS has global R&D facilities and manufacturing plants, mainly in the US and Europe, and its products are marketed to health care practitioners, hospitals, and managed care providers in 100 countries.
BMS' major R&D facilities are in New Jersey and Connecticut, with other sites in the US, the UK, Belgium, India, and other countries. It has about a dozen manufacturing facilities, which are located in the US and Puerto Rico, France, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, and China.
Sales and Marketing
BMS sells its products globally, although US wholesale drug distributors McKesson, Cardinal Health, and AmerisourceBergen account for about 60% of sales. In addition to wholesalers, the company also sells some products directly to customers including retailers, hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies. BMS employs a direct sales force in certain markets; it also uses independent marketing representatives.
The biggest story for BMS is the looming loss of US patent protection on its best selling drugs Plavix (33% of sales in 2011) and Avapro (5% of sales) in the first half of 2012. Because it doesn't have any surefire blockbuster drugs waiting in the wings to offset the losses, the company is pinning its future on harder-to-copy biopharmaceuticals. In addition, beginning in 2007 BMS launched a multi-year restructuring effort. It divested all of its non-pharmaceutical operations, shuttered or sold more than half of its manufacturing and packing facilities, and trimmed its workforce by at least 10%.
Sales dropped in 2009 after a series of asset divestitures, but in 2010 and 2011 the company increased revenues by 4% (to $19.5 billion) and 9% ($21.2 billion), respectively. As a result of its restructuring efforts, BMS also reported improved profits in 2011, with net income rising 20% to $3.7 billion (after a sharp drop in profits during 2010).
To remake itself into a biopharmaceutical powerhouse, the company must first add more biopharmaceutical drugs and drug candidates to its pipeline. And, to give its plan more luster, BMS named it the string-of-pearls strategy. Since 2007 the company has completed almost a dozen licensing deals and major acquisitions in areas including hepatitis C, diabetes, and inflammatory disease.
Collaborations are also an important part of BMS' development and marketing strategy. The company not only works with other research organizations throughout the world, it also engages collaboratively with physicians, hospitals, and medical schools. Its R&D efforts are focused on areas of significant unmet medical need, including psychiatric, neurological, cardiovascular, metabolism, oncology, bacterial and viral infections, and inflammatory or immune system disorders. French drugmaker Sanofi manufactures and distributes several BMS products, including Plavix and Avapro. Japanese drug firm Otsuka Pharmaceutical co-promotes Abilify and certain oncology products. BMS also works to expand its offerings and fight off patent expiration losses by finding new uses of already approved drugs. For instance, BMS and Otsuka gained approval for Abilify as a treatment for bipolar disorder in 2011.
Recently approved drugs in the company's cabinet include Orencia (rheumatoid arthritis), Ixempra (cancer), and Emsam, (major depressive disorder). In 2011 the FDA approved its kidney transplant drug belatacept, marketed as Nulojix, and BMS launched Yervoy in the US and EU for treating adults with inoperable or metastatic melanoma as well as Onglyza/Kombiglyze for type 2 diabetes (developed with AstraZeneca). Late stage drugs in the BMS development pipeline include Eliquis for prevention of stroke, Dapagliflozin for treating diabetes, and oncology drug Brivanib, plus potential added indications for its key marketed products.
Mergers and Acquisitions
In 2012 BMS made a huge splash when it acquired Amylin Pharmaceuticals in a $7 billion deal ($5.3 billion in cash, plus $1.7 billion in debt and contractual obligations to Amylin's former partner Eli Lilly). The purchase added new diabetes drugs to BMS' offerings, including Byetta, Symlin, and Bydureon. As a follow-on to the deal, BMS and AstraZeneca extended their existing diabetes collaboration partnership to develop additional drugs based on Amylin's technologies; AstraZeneca paid Amylin some $3.2 billion to gain access to those R&D programs immediately after the BMS acquisition transaction closed.
Earlier in 2012 BMS completed another big dealpurchased drug developer Inhibitex for a whopping $2.5 billion. The purchase added Inhibitex's lead hepatitis C asset, INX-189 to its growing portfolio of HCV programs. Inhibitex's INX-189 is an oral nucleotide polymerase (NS5B) inhibitor that is in Phase II development.
Earlier purchases include the 2011 acquisition of small-molecule pharmaceutical company Amira Pharmaceuticals in a deal worth up to $475 million including milestone payments. Through the deal, BMS gained Amira's two key research programs in inflammatory and tissue-scarring diseases. Amira's lead candidate, AM152, is in early clinical testing for pulmonary fibrosis, a fatal lung disease. In addition, BMS purchased development partner ZymoGenetics for some $885 million in 2010 to gain full access to their collaborative hepatitis C development program. more »

Integrated oil and gas company Hess Corporation has corporate exploration and production operations in Algeria, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, China, Denmark, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, France, Gabon, Ghana, Indonesia, Kurdistan, Libya, Malaysia, Norway, Peru, Russia, Thailand, the UK, and the US. In 2011 Hess reported proved reserves totaling more than 2.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent. It markets gasoline through more than 1,360 HESS gas stations in 16 US states and operates a 50%-owned oil storage terminal (HOVENSA) in the US Virgin Islands and a refinery in New Jersey. It also provides power to Northeast and Mid-Atlantic customers.
Robust oil prices and higher refined petroleum product prices lifted Hess' revenue in 2011, despite a decline in crude oil and petroleum product sales volume. However, net income was also down due to higher expenses, primarily related to the higher prices of purchased refined petroleum products. The company's 2011 financial performance was also trimmed by operational issues (and related fiscal losses) at its HOVENSA refinery, which led to that refinery being shut down and Hess taking $525 million in impairment-related charges.
Following a difficult 2009 when the global recession hammered commodity prices and weakened revenues and income, an expanding economy (with its higher oil and gas prices and increased industrial demand) helped the company post higher revenues and income in 2010.
Hess' European properties account for more than 30% of its total proved oil and gas reserves. In 2009 it boosted its European assets further, swapping some noncore properties with Royal Dutch Shell in return for major stakes in two Norwegian offshore fields. The company plans to exploit attractive properties in Algeria, Australia, Azerbaijan, and Latin America, as well as Asia (particularly in Malaysia and Thailand) to boost its reserves.
Hess' refinery in the US Virgin Islands was operated as a joint venture with Venezuela's state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela S.A (PDVSA). However, the loss-making refinery was shut down in 2012 and converted to an oil storage terminal. In 2013 Hess announced that it will complete its exit from the refining business by closing its Port Reading, New Jersey refinery.
The company is looking to grow its position in the lucrative Bakken oil shale play in North Dakota. In 2010 the company acquired American Oil and Gas in a $450 million stock deal that added 85,000 net acres to Hess' holdings. It also bought 167,000 acres in the Bakken play from TRZ Energy, LLC for $1 billion.
The Utica Shale in Ohio is another growth area. In 2011 Hess agreed to pay up to $593 million for joint exploration and development rights to CONSOL Energy's nearly 200,000 Utica Shale acres in Ohio. It subsequently acquired acquired Marquette Exploration LLC and other Utica Shale leases for $750 million, boosting its acreage position by 85,000 net acres. (To help pay for this it sold noncore UK North Sea assets that year to generate $359 million in cash.)
Hess also seeks opportunities on the marketing side of the business. In late 2008 Hess expanded its electricity marketing business in its core US retail market, acquiring power assets in the northeastern US from RRI Energy (now GenOn Energy. In 2011 the company was marketing a total of more than 4,370 MW a day.more »
