Detroit's economy may be lackluster, but DTE Energy still provides a reliable spark. The holding company's main subsidiary, Detroit Edison, distributes electricity to some 2.1 million customers in southeastern Michigan. The utility's power plants (mainly fossil-fueled) have a generating capacity of more than 10,420 MW. The company's Michigan Consolidated Gas (MichCon) unit distributes natural gas to 1.2 million customers. DTE Energy's nonregulated operations (in 26 US states) include energy marketing and trading; coal transportation and procurement; energy management services for commercial and industrial customers; independent and on-site power generation; and gas exploration, production, and processing.
The company operates in the Midwest, the northeastern US, and eastern Canada. It has utilities in Michigan and merchant generation facilities in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Its portfolio includes non-utility energy businesses operating in 26 states (energy trading, power and industrial projects, coal and gas midstream, and unconventional gas production).
DTE Energy has electric and gas utilities. It also has wholesale power, gas, and coal marketing operations.
Higher rates and increased power demand lifted DTE Energy's overall revenues in 2011 by 4% despite lower natural gas prices, which caused gas utility revenues to drop by 9%. Net income was up by 13%, primarily due to lower operational costs and a drop in depreciation, depletion, and amortization charges, and lower interest expenses.
DTE Energy is expanding its nonutility businesses (especially gas storage and pipeline projects and power and industrial projects) to broaden its revenue base. In 2012 it signed a deal with Spectra Energy and Enbridge to jointly develop the NEXUS Gas Transmission system, a 250-mile long pipeline project to transport the growing supplies of Ohio Utica shale gas to markets in Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario.
As part of its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint to meet regulatory requirements the company is developing alternatives to coal-fired power generation, and is seeking ways to conserve power. In 2011 the company was operating four biomass-fired electric generating plants with a capacity of 183 MW. In addition, DTE Energy offers appliance recycling and is pursuing the adoption of advanced metering infrastructure and other technologies to improve the efficiency of its electric distribution service.

From the ground up, Fluor Corporation is one of the world's largest international design, engineering, and contracting firms. It provides engineering, procurement, construction, maintenance (EPCM), as well as project management services for a variety of industrial sectors around the world. Its myriad portfolio includes manufacturing plants, refineries, pharmaceutical facilities, health care buildings, power plants, and telecommunications and transportation infrastructure. Oil and gas, industrial, and infrastructure projects account for more than half of Fluor's sales. The group also provides operations and maintenance services for its projects, as well as administrative and support services to the US government.
The company is structured into five primary segments by sector: oil and gas, industrial and infrastructure, power, global services, and government. A separate group, Fluor Constructors International, provides unionized construction and construction services in the US and Canada. Fluor's oil and gas segment provides design, engineering, and construction and project management services to markets including upstream oil and gas producers, refiners, petrochemical manufacturers, and producers of specialty and fine chemicals. The unit also provides oversight of other contractors and procurement of labor, equipment, and materials.
Fluor's oil and gas segment has traditionally been the primary driver for growth in the company, generally benefitting from increased global demand for oil. However, falling oil prices and the downturn in the economy has hurt the segment, especially related to its downstream operations. No longer Fluor's largest segment as of 2011, oil and gas saw its revenues slip by about half in 2010. Increased construction activities led to modest growth in 2011, but profitability declined that year.
Even still, Flour continues to look for new opportunities to grow its oil and gas business. In 2011 the company made a niche acquisition when it bought Goar, Allison & Associates, a company that specializes in sulfur technologies for upstream gas plants and refineries.
The rapidly growing industrial and infrastructure segment -- which overtook oil and gas as the largest segment in 2011 -- provides design, engineering, procurement, and construction services for pharmaceutical and biotechnology facilities, commercial and institutional buildings, and mining, telecommunications, wind power, and transportation projects. The unit also participates in public/private partnerships to oversee financing and management of roadway and railway projects. One ongoing significant project is the world's largest offshore wind farm development off the coast of the UK. The project is expected to help produce 25 gigawatts of wind energy by 2020.
Fluor's government services segment, another growing division, offers project management services primarily to the US Departments of Energy, Defense, and Homeland Security. It provides environmental restoration, engineering and construction, and operations and maintenance services for two former nuclear weapons complexes that are now DOE cleanup sites: the Savannah River site in South Carolina and the Hanford Environmental Management Project in Richland, Washington. Subsidiary Del-Jen provides military base operations and maintenance services and other logistical and infrastructure services around the world. Fluor's largest long-term job, a multi-billion dollar, multiyear project, is its LOGCAP IV contract to provide services to the US military, primarily in Afghanistan. However, defense spending is expected to decline, which could hurt Fluor's business in the future.
Fluor jumped into the growing outsourcing services market with its global services segment, which provides operations and maintenance support, temporary staffing (through TRS Staffing Solutions), and asset management. Fluor also provides construction equipment, tools, and fleet outsourcing for construction projects and plant sites worldwide through subsidiary American Equipment Company (AMECO).
The group's smallest segment is its power segment, through which it provides EPCM and other services to the gas fueled, solid fuels, renewables, environmental compliance, nuclear, and power services markets. Fluor added to the segment in 2011 with the acquisition of a majority stake in NuScale Power, a designer of small modular nuclear reactors.
Overall, the engineering and construction industry faces challenges with heavy competition and overcapacity. Due to its great size, Fluor is well-positioned to survive in this climate, as it is active in diverse sectors as well as experienced in carrying out projects in difficult locations such as the Middle East. The company also boasts a strong balance sheet, which makes it ready to take advantage of strategic acquisition opportunities. Fluor's revenues grew by 12% to a record $23.4 billion in 2011, while its net income rose some 66% to $593.7 million. National Oilwell Varco is the tool man that provides goods and services to exploration and production companies operating in oil patches around the world. The company makes, distributes, and services oil and gas drilling equipment for land and offshore drilling rigs. Its mechanical components include drawworks, mud pumps, cranes, jacking systems, automated pipehandling tools, top drives, and traveling equipment. Other products include masts, derricks, substructures, and cranes. National Oilwell Varco operates in more than 900 locations on six continents, including a network of 270 distribution service centers, to serve its oil and gas company customers.
Its Rig Technology segment (its largest segment) serves supplies drilling contractors, oilfield service companies, and oil and gas companies with major drilling equipment and spare parts. Its Petroleum Services & Supplies segment provides a range of products and services used to drill, complete, remediate oil and gas wells and service pipelines, along with other oilfield tubular products. Both segments are dependent to a large degree on oil prices and the global demand for oil exploration. Finally, its Distribution & Transmission segment provides maintenance, repair, and operating supplies (MRO) and spare parts to drill site and production locations across the globe.
The robust oil and gas market in 2011 spurred greater demand for National Oilwell Varco's products and services, which coupled with acquisitions, helped to lift the company's revenues and net income by about 20% for the fiscal year. Each of its business segments - Rig Technology, Petroleum Services & Supplies, and Distribution & Transmission - saw revenues increase 12%, 35%, and 21%, respectively, in 2011 over 2010.
Mergers and Acquisitions
Acquisitions continue to play a big part of National Oilwell Varco's strategy. In mid-2012 it agreed to acquire Robbins & Myers, a provider of services and equipment to the upstream oil and gas industry, in an all-cash transaction for $2.5 billion. Robbins & Myers' complementary products include downhole tools, pumps, and valves. This will be the company's second-largest acquisition since it bought Grant Prideco for about $7.2 billion in 2008. That year it also bought Canadian equipment distributor CE Franklin for about $240 million.
Earlier in 2012 National Oilwell Varco bought parts and supplies provider Wilson International from Schlumberger. Wilson has an extensive supply chain portfolio, with which National Oilwell Varco expects to take advantage of new market opportunities. It also bought Denmark-based flexible pipe maker NKT Flexibles (a joint venture between NKT Holding and Subsea 7) for $670 million.
In total, National Oilwell Varco bought 10 companies for more than $1 billion in 2011 and 12 companies for $556 million in 2010. Significant acquisitions include that of oilfield equipment maker and services provider Ameron in a $777 million deal, a move that helped to expand National Oilwell Varco's Fiberglass & Composite Tubulars business.
