The question and answer (Q&A) format breaks the content into smaller sections the reader can easily digest. Discussion questions: Such questions expect you to provide in-depth answers through extensive research. You use evidence to debate the topic. Discussion questions explore your reasoning and contemplations.
Question within a question: When two or more related questions intertwine, one becomes the main and the others its subset. You respond to the main query in the first paragraph, then use transitional sentences to answer the subset questions. Such essays usually have more than one topic.
Absolute questions: They often involve true-or-false scenarios. You provide the answer using words like yes, no, never, all, only and always. The response confirms whether the statement is true or false.

How to structure the questions and answer format

When structuring a Q&A essay, first understand the topic and then decide what information to include. You can then elaborate a clear distinction between the questions and answers through the following steps:

1. Establish you understand the topic

Start the essay with a heading that can include your name, the instructor's or course's name, your institution and the date. Proceed to write the title at the center of the page under your heading. Number all the pages using your surname and a numerical value at the upper right-hand corners.

For the first question, type number one and add a period, and then write the question using the approved font and size on the same line. Punctuate correctly using a question mark at the end of the question. The first question is an overview of the essay so that the others can be detailed and specific. Provide the answers before proceeding to the second question and so forth.

2. Use an academic tone

A professional tone is simple, with short, engaging paragraphs that effectively address the audience. You can use a conversational tone when answering open-ended questions as long as you encourage discussion. Give clear and concise answers through short and complete sentences. It is okay to start a new paragraph for long answers but indent every new paragraph.

4. Space the essay properly

Double-space the sentences and use 1-inch margins. To double space a document, click on Design, Paragraph Spacing, then chose Double. Start each answer on a new line separate from the question. Click the enter tab after typing a query to create space between the question and the first word of the answer.

APA and MLA recommend all the pages of your essay to have 1-inch margins on the left, right, top and bottom. Also, indent the first line of every paragraph by 1/2 inch by pressing the space bar once. Choose Align Left on your word processor to line up the text evenly at the left margin.

5. Cite your sources

Cite evidence using in-text citations and provide a reference page at the end. You can also use direct quotes where you use the author's words as is, and indirect quotes where you paraphrase the author's words to support your answer.
