Determine the steps you'll take to achieve your goals. Consider separating your overall goal into smaller subgoals. For example, plan one to three actions you can do each week to help you get one step closer to completing your goal. Focusing on small actions over an extended period ensures you're following your plan and that you're on the right track toward achieving your goal. It also allows you to have small victories on your road to achieving your overarching goal. Doing this also allows you to track your progress more efficiently.

3. Set a timeline

Once you've devised a plan, determine a timeline that reflects how long it will take to achieve each of your sub-goals and your larger goal. Having a timeline helps keep you accountable and ensures you're on track for completing your goal. For example, if you miss a deadline you set for yourself for a smaller goal, this lets you know that you need to work harder and stay focused in order to complete your larger goal by the original deadline you set. Setting a timeline can also provide you with the motivation you need to continue with your plan.

4. Consider the obstacles

This allows you to make some sort of progress even if you're not physically working on your goal at the moment.

For example, if you're working at home, make sure you don't have any distractions that can deter you from your work. Overall, make sure your environment is conducive to your productivity.

It's even more helpful if you find people who are working on their own set of goals. This is because they can provide you with relevant advice, feedback or insight that you may not have considered—especially if their goals align with yours.

While you may have a timeline and plan to help you achieve your goal, it's important to devote a set amount of time each day or week to help you stay on track. Remind yourself that when it comes to achieving a goal, you need to put in the necessary work—whether it be for a week, month or year. While your everyday actions don't need to be big, it's important to take some sort of step toward achieving your goal.

Create a daily routine and schedule a set amount of time to work on your goal. Dedicating enough time for each task helps create a habit and ensures steady progress.

Keep track of your progress to keep you on schedule, but also to provide you with added motivation. If you see that you're close to achieving your goal, it may encourage you to work harder to finish your tasks earlier.
