News: Tech Graduates Increasingly Seek Remote Jobs in 2021

While the tech industry initially suffered losses like nearly every other sector at the start of the pandemic, new graduates who hope to secure an entry-level tech job will find themselves job searching in a recovering segment. According to Hiring Lab, job postings in tech have picked up in recent months, partially due to the high volume of remote tech jobs.

As a result of the global pandemic, many companies asked their employees to work from home. According to a survey of 349 companies by Pearl Meyer on Work From Home Policies and Practices, over 80% said their shift to work from home has been successful and 40% even reported an increase in productivity. 33% said their U.S.-based workforce will work remotely post-pandemic. Tech jobs are among the likeliest to be remote.

In this report, we’ll explore the interest of entry-level tech workers in remote roles including which job titles they’re most interested in vs. those most in-demand by employers as shown by Indeed data.

Entry-level tech workers are interested in remote roles

COVID-19 has certainly impacted the way graduates might think about the opportunities available to them—one criterion being remote or flexible work options. The percentage of searches for remote roles by entry-level candidates has more than doubled since 2020. Indeed data shows that among people with fewer than 24 months of experience, 3.5% of job searches were for remote jobs in 2020 vs. 10.5% in 2021. Remote job postings have also doubled during the pandemic, and continue to rise.

Most searched cities for entry-level tech jobs

While many new grads searching for entry-level tech jobs seek remote work, still, others seek jobs in specific cities across the U.S. While there was some speculation that tech jobs may spread out vs. staying concentrated in certain cities, it's true that tech hubs like San Francisco, Seattle, Austin, and Washington, DC have largely held on to tech roles.

The metros that made up the largest portion of entry-level tech job searches so far in 2021 are New York-Newark-Jersey City, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim and Washington DC-Arlington-Alexandria. However, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach and San Diego-Carlsbad have seen the largest gains in share of searches since 2019, which may indicate some changing interest in certain locations for tech jobs. Conversely, Boston-Cambridge-Newton, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara and New York-Newark-Jersey City have seen the biggest losses in entry-level tech job searches since 2019.

Among tech workers with fewer than 24 months of experience, most seem to be interested in software engineering, data analyst and software developer roles.

Tips for finding a remote tech job

If you’ve recently graduated, congratulations! Ending your academic career and stepping into the professional world is an exciting time. If you’re looking for a remote job, there are a few ways you can tweak your job search process to find opportunities in tech that fit your criteria:

1. Include remote work terms in your search
When searching for a job on Indeed, you might find remote jobs by including terms such as “remote,” “work from home” or “telework” in your search. For example, instead of searching for “software engineer,” you might try “work from home software engineer” or “remote software engineer” to see if you get more appropriate results.

2. Search for “remote” in the location (“where”) field
Another way to find remote tech jobs on Indeed is by entering “remote” in the “Where” field on the Indeed.com home page. Then, in the “What” field, include your job title or search term of choice.

3. Filter your search results
Finally, another simple way to find remote jobs on Indeed is by filtering your search results. After you’ve entered your job title or search term in the “What” box, you’ll get a list of job postings. From there, you can use the filters near the top of the page to refine your search using the “Remote” dropdown to find temporarily or permanently remote jobs.

You can also filter by:

  • Job type (part time, full time, etc.)
  • Experience level
  • Company
  • Salary estimate
  • Skills (ex. Java, SQL, Python, etc.)

4. Write a great resume
Your resume is typically your first opportunity to make a great impression. To stand out in the applicant pool, your resume should be easy to read with a clean, professional format and relevant to the job posting. Employers and recruiters should be able to easily find the information on your resume that conveys why you’re a great fit for the job.

To do this, reread the job description and take note of keywords that match your background. These might be qualities, hard skills, soft skills, specific experiences or other qualifications. Then, weave those keywords into your resume in relevant places such as your resume summary, professional experience and skills sections.

If you don’t yet have any professional experience, use this section to record other experiences you’ve had that allowed you to build skills the employer may be interested in.

You should also prepare for technical interview questions as it pertains to your role.

Here are a few tips to ensure your next virtual interview is a success:

  • Before your interview, make sure your computer audio and video are in working order. Ask a friend or family member to test the connection with you beforehand.
  • Test your internet connection in the exact location you plan to take the interview to make sure it's fast and clear.
  • Find a quiet, distraction-free interview spot with a professional background.
  • Make sure your face is near the middle of the screen without too much space above or below your head. If you need to reposition your camera so it's pointed straight-on, try adding books or boxes below your computer until you like the angle.
  • Double-check that your source of light comes from behind your computer screen and be pointed towards your face. Light that comes from behind your head might make your face more difficult for interviewers to see.
