You got the interview for the architect position you truly want. Now, you need to prepare. While some architecture interview questions might be generalized, the grand majority will be phrased within the context of the design field. Preparing to effectively answer these architecture-specific questions is crucial.

In this article, we will outline the three types of architecture interview questions you might face during a job interview—general, experience and background and in-depth—plus, we provide sample answers to five specific questions for an architect position

General interview questions

These questions will allow the interviewer to assess your experience level, personality and interest in the position in general:

Questions about experience and background

As a building architect, you’ll need to demonstrate that you are experienced in the field, relay the reason you pursued a career in architecture and explain how you would perform under certain circumstances. These questions will provide interviewers with a better look at your qualifications and determine whether or not they align with the position and company. You’ll likely be asked:

  9. How do you organize, plan and prioritize your work as an architect?

  10. In your opinion, what is the key to ensuring a building is compliant with all laws and regulations applicable?

Interview questions with sample answers

Here are common questions you’ll likely be asked during an architecture interview as well as advice for how to answer them. As an architect, you must have excellent visualization and verbal communication skills and be capable of solving problems that might arise. Remember that your interview is a great way to start displaying these skills.

1. Why do you want to be an architect?

This question is a great opportunity to showcase your passion for architecture and let the interviewer know what drives you in your career. Interviewers are gauging your interest in the field when they ask this question. Everyone’s answer will vary, but you can demonstrate your passion for architecture with a personal anecdote and/or mentioning a person or experience that influenced your chosen profession.

Example: “I have a passion for people just as much as I do for buildings. As architects, we’re creating functional buildings for clients to use based on their varying needs and desires. Understanding our clients is imperative and ultimately fuels my passion for this field.”

2. What makes you a good fit for this firm?

This question is a great way for an interviewer to discover how well you know the company and how your experience and skills align with the job description. Make sure you thoroughly research the firm you’re applying to and display how you could be a valuable asset to the company. This answer will vary based on your own personal sentiments toward the company and the company itself.

Example: “I’ve come to admire many of New York City’s buildings–from the healthcare sector to the commercial building sector. Seeing as your firm is located in New York and works in a multitude of sectors, I’m confident that my passion for various types of buildings aligns with your firm’s mission. I’m also a fan of your firm’s culture and am well-versed in AutoCAD, which your firm uses to design and draft buildings. Understanding and having experience in a company’s software is paramount and I am confident in my capabilities to excel in this position with the required qualifications.”

3. What skill has served you best in your architecture career?

This question allows interviewers to see how you rank your skills. They’re also looking to make sure you have the right set of qualifications that would make you a good fit for this position. Make sure to mention the skills listed in the job description as well as the top skills for general architecture candidates.

Example: “Excellent verbal communication is key for architects. This has undoubtedly been the most useful skill in my career. When problems arise, it’s important to know how to communicate with my team to resolve any issues and press on toward project completion. Good communication allows the quality of work to excel.”

4. What architect has been most influential on your work or work style?

When they ask this question, interviewers are testing your knowledge of architectural figures and trying to learn more about your background and values as an architect. Be sure to research the most influential architect to your career and explain why they have been influential on and significant in your career.

Example: “Frank Gehry has been the most influential figure in my architectural approach. His designs as a deconstructionist have inspired me to push the boundaries of my own work. While elements of his designs appear fragmented, they blend cohesively to create astounding pieces of architecture. His complex style of architectural design and his contributions to humanity is something I aspire to achieve in this profession.”

5. Two team members aren’t getting along and the client is beginning to notice. What would you do to diffuse the situation?

This question is a great way to understand your behavioral methods for handling conflict in the workplace. Interviewers are hoping to see you acknowledge these issues and your methodology for resolving them.

Example: “I would spend time with both team members, have them explain their concerns and work toward a solution. I would encourage them to come to me should a similar occurrence arise, however, I would explain these circumstances are unacceptable in the workplace—especially with the client present. I would also explain that these disturbances can hinder the team’s overall morale, the resulting project and the client’s trust.”

The interview questions used in an architecture interview will greatly depend on the firm, the sectors the firm works in and your own experience level. Understanding what the company is looking for in an employee as well as knowing the company’s mission and values will help you adequately prepare for upcoming interviews in this field.
