As an aspiring magazine editor, it can be important for your resume to emphasize your storytelling ability, publishing experience and management skills, for example. Learning what to include in your resume can help you identify qualifications that are most important for the potential employer to know about you.

How to write a magazine editor resume

The following steps demonstrate how to market your qualifications on your resume:

1. Write ways to contact you

Your contact information appears underneath your name at the top of your resume. The employer may wish to contact you electronically, so include a professional email address with an inbox that you check often. If the next phase of the hiring process is a phone interview, then the employer may use your phone number as well. A career portfolio can display your previous work from publications you've worked for in the past. Include a link to the album on your resume, or you can add the website of an online job profile that may showcase your credentials in more detail.

2. Compose a professional summary

A professional summary is a short paragraph that showcases your eligibility for a magazine editor position. It's an opportunity to make a positive first impression on the hiring manager, encouraging them to pay close attention to the rest of your resume. In two to three sentences, emphasize the skills that you can apply to the role if hired. You can quantify the number of years you've worked for publications and describe who you are as a professional by using adjectives, such as dependable and creative. The summary is also an opportunity to name your accomplishments, such as boosting magazine sales.

3. Outline your employment history

The work experience section summarizes your previous roles in the publishing industry. Starting with your current position, write your job title, employment dates and the name and location of your employer. Next, list your job duties, prioritizing tasks and professional achievements that relate to magazine editing. For example, suppose your desired role requires employees to create storyboards for upcoming publications, a task that you're responsible for in your present job. Add the task to the list to demonstrate that you have experience handling the responsibilities of a magazine editor.

4. Highlight your skills

The skills section contains competencies that can enable you to work for a publication. Highlight the same abilities that the job description emphasized to show you're compatible with the magazine editor position. For example, you can showcase your knowledge of research, proficiency in proofreading or ability to organize newsworthy stories to appeal to readers. It can also be beneficial to discuss soft skills, such as adaptability, multitasking and detail orientation.

Use the education section of your magazine editor resume to show you studied written communication and editing techniques in school. Indicate the name of your college degree and the institution you attended. If you're a recent graduate, then you can add the year you earned the degree.
