When you're applying for a position as a peer counselor, you usually send a copy of your resume. Hiring managers read candidates' resumes to decide if they're qualified for the role. If you're trying to secure a job as a peer counselor, it might benefit you to learn how to write an impressive resume that lists all your qualifications. In this article, we discuss how to write a peer counselor resume in six steps and provide a resume template and an example for you to use as a reference when writing your own.

What is a peer counselor?

A peer counselor is a professional who meets with a variety of clients to help improve their lives. Peer counselors use their own life experiences to relate to clients and give them advice. They may have appointments with struggling men, women, couples or families to listen to their struggles. Peer counselors may also offer resources to their clients, such as information about local food and shelter organizations.

While meeting with clients, peer counselors may help them define goals to improve their current situation. Then, they help clients meet their goals by developing actionable steps for them to take. These professionals sometimes offer mental or emotional support to clients and help them develop coping mechanisms for their issues.

How to write a peer counselor resume

Here are six steps to writing a peer counselor resume:

1. List your contact information

The first step in writing your peer counselor resume is to list your contact information. On a separate line, write your first and last name. Below your name, add your phone number, professional email address, location and a link to your work portfolio. Including your contact information allows the hiring manager to communicate with you in case they'd like to schedule an interview or hire you.

2. Write a professional summary

After you include your contact information, write a professional summary. A professional summary is a brief description of who you are as an employee. In a couple of sentences, summarize your work experience and skills. You may also add your career objectives or goals, like the type of position you're seeking.

3. Include your education

Once you add your professional summary, include your education. While not all peer counselors have a four-year degree, you can include the highest level of education you currently have. List the name of the academic institution you went to, along with the degree you earned. Finally, include the year you graduated if it's within the last three years. If you have more than one degree, list them in reverse chronological order.

4. Add your work history

In your next section, add your work history. It's important to include your work history to show that you have professional experience that qualifies you as a peer counselor. Start with your most recent position and include your job title and the dates you worked there. On the next line, add the name and location of the company. Below that information, describe your job duties using a bulleted list. Try to use numbers and statistics to help the employer visualize how you're a valuable team member.

5. List your skills

Finally, add a separate section for your skills. Listing your skills shows the employer that you're a qualified candidate. Try to include both hard and soft skills, plus keywords from the job posting. Keywords are words and phrases that employers list on the job description to display what they're looking for in a candidate. If you use keywords on your resume, you're showing the hiring manager you're an excellent candidate who fits the job description.

6. Read and revise your resume

Once you're done writing your resume, read and revise it. Revising your resume ensures that it's free of mistakes, which can help you look professional and detail-oriented. Check your resume for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors. Also, make sure that all the information, such as names and dates, is accurate. Try reading your resume out loud to identify mistakes you missed otherwise. You can also ask your friends and family members to read your resume and give you constructive feedback.
