Pregnancy can be an exciting and busy time in your life, and you may decide to leave or change your job to focus on your family or for financial reasons. Choosing to submit a thoughtful resignation letter is a professional standard that helps your company adjust to your absence. It can also keep an open connection with your employer if you want to return to the company in the future. What to include in a pregnancy resignation letter
Most resignation letters follow the same format. For a pregnancy resignation letter, you may need to add additional elements. Here are the details you should consider for a resignation letter:
At the top of your letter, write the date you intend to deliver the letter, the recipient’s name and the company’s name and address. If you’re sending your resignation via email, you can exclude the header. Instead, you should write an email subject line that states your name and the content of the message, such as “Arianna Ferraro—Resignation July 21.” That way, the recipient can easily locate the email in their inbox.
Use a greeting that includes a salutation and the recipient’s name. If you’re writing the letter to someone you know well, such as your supervisor, you can use their first name in the greeting. For example, “Dear Malaika.” For formal letters, use their title and last name, such as “Dear Ms. Banerjee.”
At the beginning of your letter, state that you are resigning and the effective date. You can also include your reason, such as “I am happy to announce that I am pregnant and plan to focus on my family once the baby is here.”
In the body of the resignation letter, you can include your gratitude for your time at the company. Consider adding certain experiences or skills you learned to make your letter more sincere. If you are submitting your letter weeks or months before your resignation and plan to work throughout your pregnancy, you may find it challenging to perform certain physical tasks. Your company could also have a dress code that could be difficult to follow. In your letter, inform your manager of any alterations you need to make so you can continue to perform your job effectively.
You can also offer to help with the transition before you leave. Your employer may ask you to help find and train your replacement, especially if you plan to work throughout your pregnancy. This makes your departure from the company much smoother and easier on your coworkers.
At the end of your letter, thank your employer for the opportunity to work for the company. Add a closing, such as “Sincerely,” followed by your signature and printed name.

Here are a few tips to follow when writing your resignation letter:
Keep the tone positive
If you enjoy working with your manager, try to maintain the relationship by providing your personal contact information. If you decide to go back to work after a period of time, having an open line of communication can help you obtain a position with your previous employer. They may also give you a positive reference for other jobs.
Keep it brief
Your resignation letter should be less than a page long. You can schedule an in-depth conversation with your manager to discuss the transition, and your company may perform an exit interview where you explain your experience in further detail.
Use a professional format
Make sure your letter follows a standard business format. Use a professional font, such as Times New Roman or Calibri, and make the size between 10 and 12 so it’s easy to read. Use single spacing to make your letter fit on one page. Your margins should be 1-inch for each side.
Review your company’s resignation policies
Before you submit your resignation letter, review your company’s resignation policy, or if possible, contact your human resources department. You may need to deliver your resignation within a notice period that is standard to your company, though there could be exceptions. For example, you could have a doctor’s note that states you need to resign immediately due to pregnancy complications.

I have enjoyed my time at the company and appreciate your support over these five years. I will miss the company and my accounting team, in particular.
As I near my second trimester, I will need to alter some physical aspects of my job. Currently, I often transport filing boxes from our department to storage. As the boxes can reach up to 50 pounds, I will need assistance in moving them. I will also need a lumbar support pillow for my chair since I sit for long periods of time.
Please let me know how I can assist in my last few months of employment. I am happy to train my replacement before I leave, and I intend to complete all of my long-term projects.
