A cashier is a professional who works in establishments other than financial institutions and handles the cash register at different point of sale locations. They carry out the tasks of receiving and releasing money and processing credit and debit card transactions.

Working as a Cashier

A cashier may function in the following ways:

  • Collecting payments by cash, credit or debit cards or through automatic debits
  • Giving out receipts to customers who have made payments for goods and services
  • Giving refunds to customers who request such
  • Counting and checking cash in the drawers at the beginning of a workday to ensure that cash amounts are correct and there is enough change available
  • Operating electronic equipment and tools like scanners and others that are used in the process of carrying out their duties
  • Making sure the cash register is balanced at the end of a workday
