What does a Doorman do?

A doorman is a person who provides security and courtesy services at a hotel or residential building. They work with building superintendents and other doormen. The primary duty of doormen is security. Doormen also provide courtesy services such as opening and closing doors, operating elevators, screening visitors and accepting packages. In the entertainment industry, doormen are the equivalent of bouncers.

What does a doorman do?

A doorman maintains security by monitoring the movement of people in and out of buildings to identify intruders. Doormen can tell when something is wrong with a resident because they often know tenants' routine. Other duties include keeping the entrance clean and free of snow during the winter and monitoring security cameras. They also provide these courtesy services:

  • Screening visitors before allowing them into the building
  • Accepting and signing for packages on behalf of tenants
  • Hailing taxis for residents and visitors
  • Carrying luggage from the entrance or elevator to the residents' door
  • Coordinating the pickup and delivery of laundry.
