To work as a high school teacher in a public school, you typically need to hold a bachelor's degree at minimum in the subject you want to teach, such as English, math or physical education. You'll also need a license to practice as a teacher in the state where you plan to teach. You may need to complete an accredited teacher preparation program that provides student-teacher experience. Many colleges offer this type of program.
High school teachers at private schools do not always need to have a college degree or state license. However, most schools give preference to teachers who have bachelor's degrees with majors in the subjects they plan to teach.
