How to become a Merchandiser

Certification is not a requirement, but many schools offer retail merchandising certifications that can help you advance in the industry. Here are a few steps that you can follow to become a merchandiser.

  1. Obtain your high school diploma or GED.
  2. Post-secondary education is not required to be a merchandiser. However, an associate's degree in retail merchandising or retail-related area can make you a more competitive candidate and provide a solid foundation for career advancement.
  3. Obtain a merchandising certificate from an accredited institution. The certificate in retail merchandising will help you complete for entry-level merchandising positions, as well as provide leverage to increase your earning capacity in the industry.
  4. Get a job in retail. An entry-level position in the retail industry is a great start to merchandising, and most merchandiser positions require a minimum of two years of professional experience working in retail.
  5. Strengthen your relevant skills. Merchandisers will benefit from good organizational skills, which will help them track inventory and organize products attractively on sales displays. Merchandisers also typically need creativity and computer literacy.
