How to become a Real Estate Appraiser

Here are the steps typically necessary to become a real estate appraiser:

  1. Pursue education. Commercial and residential real estate appraisers typically need a bachelor's degree to become certified appraisers.
  2. Go through training. Appraisers usually need to take basic appraisal courses, undergo long-term training on the job and work a certain number of hours before they can become licensed or certified.
  3. Become certified. There are four certification levels available depending on the candidate's experience: Licensed Trainee Appraiser, Licensed Residential Appraiser, Certified Residential Appraiser and Certified General Appraiser.
  4. Taking continuing education courses. Licensed and certified real estate appraisers are required to take continuing education courses.
