Here are the steps typically necessary to become a real estate appraiser:
- Pursue education. Commercial and residential real estate appraisers typically need a bachelor's degree to become certified appraisers.
- Go through training. Appraisers usually need to take basic appraisal courses, undergo long-term training on the job and work a certain number of hours before they can become licensed or certified.
- Become certified. There are four certification levels available depending on the candidate's experience: Licensed Trainee Appraiser, Licensed Residential Appraiser, Certified Residential Appraiser and Certified General Appraiser.
- Taking continuing education courses. Licensed and certified real estate appraisers are required to take continuing education courses.
