I did my certification through the city of Austin. On the first day they made up do some prereqs like swim a 300 yards, tread for 2 mins (without using your hands), retrieve 10lbs brick. We went through all the chapters in The American Red Cross lifeguarding book, it was heavy in material but we were able to learn everything in 5 days and then at the end of the last day were the testouts. 3 paper tests than CPR & AED water resource tests.
