Florida Cosmetology License Requirements & Costs

Those who are 16 years of age or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent and undergo a training program are eligible to apply for testing for a Florida cosmetology license.1

Requirements include:

  • Cosmetology – 1,200 hours of instruction in a state-approved cosmetology program, passage of practical and written exams and completion of an HIV/AIDS course
  • Nail Specialist – Completion of a 240-hour Florida state specialty program and HIV/AIDS course
  • Facial Specialist – Completion of a 260-hour Florida state specialty program and an HIV/AIDS course
  • Full Specialist – For licensing as both facial specialist and nail specialist services, the completion of 500 school hours in a Florida specialty program
  • Body Wrapper – For special certification to apply pre-soaked herbal wrappings to the body to cleanse and beautify skin, applicants must complete a 2-day, 12-hour course approved by the Board of Cosmetology
  • Hair Wrapper – Completion of a 2-day, 16-hour Board of Cosmetology approved course in hair braiding

Licenses are issued by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation1 Board of Cosmetology.
