To earn a cosmetology license in Louisiana, residents must be at least 16 years of age, have a 10th grade education or equivalent and complete one of the following training courses1:
Following the completion of a training program, applicants must pass state theory and practical examinations to earn their licenses, and residents have 6 years following the completion of their training hours to pass the exams.
The state also issues threading permits for a $25 fee, which are required for those who wish to provide threading services but do not hold cosmetology licenses. Microdermabrasion permits are available to licensed cosmetologists or estheticians for a $25 fee.
Testing in Louisiana costs $83 for the national test, $25 for the state test and $25 for the practical exam. Initial cosmetology licenses cost $25. Licenses are issued by the Louisiana Board of Cosmetology1.
