Oregon Cosmetology License Requirements & Costs

To earn a cosmetology license in Oregon, residents must complete a program through a state-licensed career school and pass written and practical examinations.1 School requirements include:

  • Hair Design – 1,110 hours of classroom training and 455 hours of practical operations
  • Barbering – 746 hours of classroom training and 465 hours of practical operations
  • Esthetics – 444 hours of classroom training and 220 hours of practical operations
  • Nail Technology – 241 hours of classroom training and 70 hours of practical operations

For all licenses, students must complete 20 hours of study on Oregon rules and regulations and 20 hours of career development training.

Licenses must be renewed every 2 years. When a license has been expired for more than 3 years, applicant must retake written and practical examinations to have the license reinstated. There is a $35 written exam fee, a $35 fee for the rules and regulations exam, a $20 initial application fee and a $45 renewal fee or a $40 online renewal fee. Licenses are issued by the Oregon Health Licensing Office Board of Cosmetology.1
