Poor Leadership, Accountability; Management
Supervisor (Current Employee) –  New York, NYDecember 3, 2018
This is by far one of the worst companies I have worked. The leadership is non active and decisions are based on favorites not in line with the employment laws. Forget abut the so called Employee Handbook as it is just there for use in terminating employees. The Directors are not qualified to be in positions. if you disagree with their behaviour, very cut throat and quick to admit it.
Promotions are based on last name and who you know, or whose daughter is married to whose son, nephew or niece. If you share the same ethnicity, then you are likely to advance and be promoted even though you lack the experience or management skills.
Those employees who have worked over 20 years are unable to comprehend the needs for change and innovation. Instead it is a constant " this is how it has been done" even though the numbers prove that it no longer works.
Bad employees are coddled while good employees have to either suffer the consequences or leave. Upper level management and HR actually prefer to not address the issues as it takes too much effort to resolve. If you leave they are likely very happy regardless of what you have done to improve working conditions.
Not sure what else to add here.
The workplace culture is bad.
Pros
work when you want
Cons
poor leadership

1199 Work Environment and Culture
Paralegal I (Current Employee) –  New York, NYSeptember 12, 2018
I think this place is a complex work environment. In order to truly be successful you need to be comfortable with the culture and truthfully that can be difficult. The benefits are great but there is not alot of room for growth and increase in pay.

Director (Former Employee) –  New York City, NYJuly 16, 2018
When I first started at 1199 NBF I was excited. Soon after I realized that the Company lacks leadership. Almost everyone in upper management only CARE about THEMSELVES. The best thing that happened for me was that I was able to go back to my old job and get out of that toxic environment.

definitely place to start your career. Salary and job advancement could be better. Union staff can be difficult to deal with sometimes. Upper mgmt. doesn't support you as I would like them to and if they like you they will make your job even more difficult.
Pros
weekends off, benefits, summer hours
Cons
union staff, non-supportive upper mgmt

Productive and Sense of accomplishment
Account Reconciliation Analyst (Current Employee) –  New York, NYApril 17, 2018
The work work environment at 1199 SEIU is similar to other work offices. Deadlines are always being thrown your way which makes the day go by extremely fast. Based on where you work you can get to know a good group of people who are more than willing to help you complete your various assignments. The culture is somewhat mixed as there are individuals who are more willing to accept changes and some who are not. You will get to practice your computer skills on a high level, whether it is on a web based application, or excel. The hardest part about the job would have to be the unrealistic deadlines. Unfortunately it is part of the job and you are required to complete the task. The most enjoyable part of the day are the people you work with.
Pros
Benefits, Vacation days, sick days, long term and short disability, 401K and a Pension Plan as well, Friendly work environment, great office location, holiday pay
Cons
Old building, elevators constantly being repaired, No working from home available

The company has good benefits. It has some training through a classroom setting and some are on the job training. It depends on the position. It is a good place to work and it is more laid back rather than strictly corporate.
Pros
Good medical benefits

Telephone Representative II (Former Employee) –  New York, NYFebruary 12, 2018
A typical day at work was to log in and assist all members calling. I learned how to manage my time more efficiently to have the calls time frame within guidelines while still going above and beyond to assist. Management was quite difficult to work with. As it was an us against them mentality in the work place as it was Union members and non union members which was management. Managment was not very helpful with system issues and misinformation being circulated as true information and never corrected with Union members being penalized with misinformation coming from management. The hardest part was attempting to assist member issues as the we had a lack of a functional system at times and the rampant misinformation being given. The most enjoyable part was when i was actually able to help a member!

Pension Calculation Supervisor (Former Employee) –  New York, NYJuly 31, 2018
The most enjoyable part of the job was the staff especially those in other departments. The child care benefits were the best summer camp opportunities during school breaks, and during the summer

Good Place to work at times
Payroll Coordinator/Program Assistant (Former Employee) –  New York, NYMarch 19, 2018
The people that work for the company made work enjoyable. Learned a lot from the eager youthful folks that enjoyed what they do to make a difference in the members' lives. However, it was challenging at times.
Challenges included working with inadequate software and limited resources. It took FOREVER to get upper management a simple request for a minor word revision of a doc that was already in use.
this happened all the time.

It's a cool environment if you stick to the script
Pros
No pay Healthcare
Cons
Outdated polices and procedures

Not the best place to work.
Registration Clerk (Former Employee) –  New York, NYJune 5, 2018
While I did enjoy the experience, it was not the best environment to work. I was working as a temp and the regular staff member's were rather rude. One of them actually stated "they sure hired a lot of fat ones". Although I am not an over weight person, it still was very offensive. There was another woman who was retiring, she was very nasty to the temp workers who did not basically jump at her every command. We are there as employees as well and that does not give you the right to treat anyone poorly.
Pros
Paid lunch period
Cons
Rude staff, gossiping, and not enough spcae to work efficiently.

no comment, I really have nothing to say other than depending your most of them are sink or swim. You can come with innovative ideas but ultimately the overachievers get jaded because there are no incentives for the small fractions of those employees.
