Cashier (Current Employee) –  Milford, MANovember 19, 2018
I liked working at ace hardware. It was a fast-pace, friendly environment to work in. I would recommend working here to friends or family because it was always a fun time communicating with and helping customers, they are all very friendly here. A lot of regulars you get to see multiple times a week.
Pros
Customers are nice, you get breaks, managers are nice.

Work experience depends on LOCATION
Warehouse Associate (Current Employee) –  Gainesville, GANovember 19, 2018
Starting pay is 13.55/hr for 2nd shift. The incentive pay is eligible at 90 days if you hit your production number. This pay is ambiguous, diminished, and heavily dependent on the approving manager. In most cases this is enough to buy fuel each week. The Gainesville RSC is poorly managed and filthy. They have rats - mice - bugs - and so much dust you will need to wear a mask. Lots of micro management and the turnover is VERY HIGH. Most incoming employees are young, desperate, with questionable criminal backgrounds. They don’t promote from within, at least for the good high paying jobs. This is a good old boy system where friends of management/corporate swoop in to snag the good jobs. If you are seeking an actual “career opportunity” look elsewhere, as this is a dead end job with minimal opportunity for advancement. Don’t be fooled by their recruiting tactics. The Gainesville, GA location is DESPERATE for help, from anyone willing to apply.
Pros
Decent place to earn weekly pay if you are desperate
Cons
Horrible company culture - pathetic management - high turnover - strict atmosphere

Cashier (Former Employee) –  Centerville, UTNovember 18, 2018
Ownership has since changed when I worked there. But I remember a fun environment with management willing to work around a college schedule. A little slow during certain times of the year.

Taking down old shelving and putting in new. Painted walls. Management was not good. Manager was was a joke didn't really explain much of how he wanted anything to go. materials that were of use were sub par. Would not recommend using any style of Ace branded paint.

Sales Associate/Customer Service (Former Employee) –  Dixon, ILNovember 18, 2018
Days were pretty varied in what you would do. You'll more than likely be trained in a variety of things and be expected to do them all at any given moment. Usually when a customer needs that specific service.
Pros
A lot of working hours offered
Cons
Very little downtime

Long Shifts w/ Poor Pay, Often just standing around
Sales Associate/ Cashier Clerk (Former Employee) –  La Plata, MDNovember 16, 2018
A typical day at work would start with walking around the store to make sure stock is fronted and such. That would usually only take about an hour or so. After that you pretty much spend most of your time waiting for customers to come in. Their really isn't much to do besides front stock and help customers. There are for sure dead hours where you're standing around just praying for something to do. The owner of the store wasn't good to his employees, always having an attitude and expecting his employees to know exactly what he's thinking all the time. Besides the owner, the rest of the management is very friendly. They are very flexible with your hours. Lunches aren't paid, forced to clock out for lunch. It's a very easy but extremely boring job.
Pros
Flexible Hours
Cons
Poor treatment of employees, boring, unpaid lunches, poor pay

Cycle Counter (Former Employee) –  Prince George, VANovember 16, 2018
I truly enjoyed my time at Ace, one of the better jobs that I have ever had. You came in and did the same thing every day, no surprises, just in different areas. The people were great, most of managers were great, they valued you as a person and not just as number but at the time held you to a high level of accountability.
Pros
Mon through Friday gig
Cons
Rats in the warehouse

Store Manager (Current Employee) –  Telluride, CONovember 16, 2018
Timberline Ace hardware is a great place to work, due to the cost of living in Telluride the drive from Montrose is 1.5 hrs each way. Overall a great place to work.

Poor Management and Awful Pay
Associate (Former Employee) –  Farmington, ILNovember 16, 2018
Not only is the manager at Ace Hardware awful (if he is even there to begin with), coworkers are competitive and rude. It was an uncomfortable place to work. I got minimal hours, minimal pay, and minimal treatment. It was a mess.
Pros
Full 8 hour shifts.
Cons
Worked three shifts a week, if I was lucky.

Typical day is very fast paced. the pay is great but the supervisors underappreciate the staff. Overtime is where the money is but if you need additional training it is very hard to get.

Cashier Stocking Customer Service Paint Department (Former Employee) –  Sandwich, ILNovember 16, 2018
Cashier mostly.
Stocked shelves when a shipment of products arrived. Anyone who needed paint made, I did the job and loved it!!!! Worked mornings and occasional evenings.
Prefer mornings to be home for supper.

Plenty of room to grow.

Had to keep checking the calendars like a worry wart. As work schedules were always different from week to week.
Pros
Management positions were open to those who were willing to take on the tasks.
Cons
Work schedules were always different. Not the same every week.

Laid back
Cashier (Current Employee) –  Great Falls, MTNovember 15, 2018
Ace Hardware is laid back. This is a dog friendly store. Some employees have been with the company for more than 10 years. Very rarely is the job stressful, considering that it is retail. Everyone is wiling to help and are patient when you make mistakes. The worst part, for me anyway, is cutting keys. If I can use the automated key cutter, things go smoothly. Not so much when I have to manually cut the keys.
Pros
Hour long lunches, dog friendly
Cons
No breaks, no drinks allowed on sales floor

As cooperatives (or even franchises) go, one of the best
Associate (Current Employee) –  Prather, CANovember 15, 2018
As my first real job, working at my local Ace Hardware was likely the best experience I could have had in my area. While I cannot speak for all Ace stores, as they are mostly (if not all) independently owned, my own employers were beyond pleasant and accommodating, and as retail work goes, one of the better places for sure.
