When working 12 hour shifts you actually don't get vacation in the normal sense, you trade time off. If your counter part takes time off you are expected to cover those shifts, usually at overtime rates. (More money in your pocket) The only draw back is if you don't appreciate extra Overtime and your counter part has many more years in the company. Which means much more vacation time to take or loose.
