Horrible place to work for it was very poorly managed. My foreman for the grounds crew wouldn’t take charge. The work that we did was not appreciated.Everyone always talked about how under appreciated there work was.Thats probably one of the reasons no one wanted to work.

Teaching Specialist (Former Employee) –  Charlottesville, VANovember 17, 2018
Albemarle County has an excellent reputation as maintaining quality public schools. There is a lot of competition for positions given the University of Virginia graduates. As would be expected, Albemarle usually has their choice of graduates which makes for a competitive environment. Overall, there is good rapport between teaching staff and administration.

A fun place to start
Office Associate (Current Employee) –  Charlottesville, VAOctober 9, 2018
*Disclaimer* I can’t speak to the local government side of things, they are very different entities, despite sharing a name* This is a fun place to work, with a lot of kind people. The atmosphere almost makes it worth it to stay. The benefits are amazing, and you’ll know you’re working for a good cause by working for your local school district. However, job repsonibilites shift almost monthly, and salaries are low unless you’re at the very top. There’s a lack of paths to advance, and it feels like 25% of the staff do 80% of the work. A lot of people get away with just showing up and coasting in an easy job, and as long as they talk a good game, they’ll make a career that way. It can be really frustrating, and good work is almost never rewarded. This is a great temporary job, but in 2 or 3 years, don’t be surprised if you don’t want to stay.
Pros
Emotionally fufilling, a lot of kind, caring staff members
Cons
Job responsibilites shift often, pay is low, and there is no path for advancement in most careers

The structure of the school system is sometimes difficult to deal with. Communication from other departments and higher up individuals is not always good.

Driver Trainer / Lead Driver (Current Employee) –  Charlottesville, VASeptember 7, 2018
Want to advance? Not here! It's all in who you know there. Even if you are more qualified then the other people applying for a job, it does not matter to them at ll.

I loved the student body!
Core+ Math Teacher, Jack Jouett Middle School (Former Employee) –  Charlottesville, VAAugust 2, 2018
There was such diversity in the student body. I enjoyed working with the students daily. As anywhere, there were so many politics when dealing with the faculty, staff, and human resources.

Teacher (Former Employee) –  Charlottesville, VAJune 11, 2018
Albemarle County is an excellent county to teach in. Students are eager to learn and parents are generally concerned about their children and wish to partner with the teacher. Overall a very good school system to work for.

When l started here l really liked this job. I was hired as a painter with about 15 years experience. Now l have taken classes and moved up to maintenance mechanic which l like but l feel like l am stuck. The management and communication is the worst I've ever seen. I would like to have daytime hours as well.

A unique place in public education
Executive Director of Technologies and Innovation (Current Employee) –  Charlottesville, VAFebruary 5, 2018
ACPS is a school system that puts kids first, and that breeds constant innovation. A relatively flat hierarchy allows ideas to spread from a wide range of sources, which makes life in central management both complicated and exciting.

The 25 schools, 14,000 students, 2,500 staff make up one of the most innovative, and one of the most successful diverse school systems in America.
