In Australia, all employees get benefits. They are federally mandated.

This might depend on your state. The only benefit I got as a part timer was 401k, but no sick time, insurance, anything like that

No. Nothing under 25 hours gets benefits.

25+ hours would be considered full time, in which case you would qualify for benefits. Part time associates (less than 25 hours), however, are not eligible for benefits.
