Productive staff and laid back style of work
Warehouse Associate (scanner/lister) (Former Employee) - Portland, OR - December 10, 2020
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThis is not a difficult job. After working here you'd most likely take a closer look at used books than what you did before. Management is not overbearing. Attendance is highly important and just always keep yourself busy. You get an hour lunch break which is cool if you want to drive home/take care of personal business, otherwise that also means you're there an additional half hour due to the hour unpaid lunch break. That makes the day feel a little longer if you're not driving away/don't have a vehicle to leave. Sometimes there are "slow" days if many books are in poor quality, depending on your job title or task that you're on. There's a lot of book scanning and/or sorting of books. It's also dusty and a bit cold there so you'd have to make sure your're dressed accordingly. You get to wear headphones while you work which makes the atmosphere feel less like you're at work and more like you're just performing tasks. If you like books you can buy them from there for a discount or take home a free book if it's too damaged to sell. It's a small company and everyone's friendly.
Pros
Free/discounted books, long lunch break, laidback, fairly easy work
Cons
Dusty, cold, wasn't offered health insurance, only 40 hours worth of vacation per year

A wonderful environment
Lister (Former Employee) - Portland, OR - November 22, 2019
The workers there seem a bit cold at first, but everyone is friendly and helpful through and through. The management is great and incredibly helpful, and the owner is very friendly. Most of the work offered is pretty repetitive, with more of an emphasis on speed and volume.

We come in, set up for the day by putting gaylors in dumpers to sort the books. Those books are sent to the back of the warehouse to be scanned.
Scanner (Current Employee) - Watehouse - September 5, 2019
Well managed, friendly environment, and a hard working company are the words I can use to describe Altair alpha. Work days are Monday- Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. We get holidays paid off, paid sick time, vacation hours, an hour lunch, and books at a reduced price. The warehouse is managed by someone that’s full of experience in many subjects. He has a great sense of humor and he is easy to get along with.

Great job, awesome schedule
Lister (Current Employee) - Portland, OR - July 25, 2019
The work is fast-paced, albeit a bit repetitive at times. Management is great and easy to get along with, and the owner is friendly. The hours are awesome, 8-5 mon-fri and currently we get an hour lunch break and payed holidays. Pay is good, especially considering how simple the work is. Great for book lovers since you can buy books from the company at a steep discount.

Bad Management
Everything (Former Employee) - Portland, OR - June 25, 2019
Things were decent until they hired a new warehouse manager who doesn’t have a clue how to do his job and acts like an unprofessional child. He is the definition of micromanagement. The owner needs to get rid of him already. Everybody who works (and worked) there hates him.

Fun place to work at
Book sorting, pickup truck driver, book hauler (Current Employee) - Portland Oregon metro area - November 4, 2018
It’s really nice working with an interesting and up beat boss. Tran is a hilarious guy who doesn’t stress anyone out and works hard to make sure all employees are understanding the process of how we do things. He’s always helping everyone and answering questions to ensure that everyone is comfortable with their work atmosphere. The job is somewhat fun because the environment is always full of talking and laughing. Sometimes we go out to get hauls and it gives us a fresh breath of air. Everyone gets well together and we all learn eachothers personalities. Great place to work at for a happy career life.
Pros
Always food and drinks in the fridge if needed
Cons
Alittle fast paced when sorting books
