Great for getting foot in the door!

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
This is a great job to get your foot into the plant industry, especially if you are a beginner with no experience. My manager and team were great, we were like a family and helped each other out. As for the more technical things;Scheduling can be flexible, I do believe that is based more on your manager and what they require. For our district Service Reps always worked either and Saturday or Sunday in the busy seasons and had weekends off in the very slow seasons (as long as we were able to work as a team and provide guidance to merchandisers). As for pay and raises, I do personally believe they could pay more for the amount of work required but for my own personal experience I was able to make a $5 raise in less than a year. So they do make the effort to reward those who not only show but continually prove to be a benefit and strong asset to the company.

pay is decent but company culture and management is exceedingly poor quality

Let me start by saying, there was a point where I genuinely LOVED my job. I felt proud to work with the country's largest supplier of plants and succulents. But the company culture ruined the experience for me. I've seen and heard management doing shady things with my own eyes and ears. There is a culture of dishonesty, favoritism, and greed and you will be the scapegoat for any and all issues whether that be a management issue, a store account issue or a store customer issue. Management does not seem to want to hear new ideas or even wants to be questioned in general as I've heard the phrase "do what i tell you and don't ask questions" When asking upper management why are so many plants being shipped out only to be thrown away I was met with a shrug and a "figure it out"Like I initially said i genuinely loved the job at first but quickly saw the reality of it. Poor company culture with poor management with little integrity.

Pros

minimal supervision, pay is decent when you get to a certain spot

Cons

poor company culture, poor management, poor support.

Great job just needs improvement

Great job just needs improvement on taking care of employees and their safety. Due to the lack of support could mean terms for that employee to quit or get fired one of the two. Had a great manager their , just had a bad experience with the place I was located.

Pros

Set your own time basically to work

Cons

Lack of job security

Fast paced and Creative

This company is unique for people who love plants and gardening. It’s for fast paced people who can use their brains while multitasking. Everyday is exciting for me to get up and get to work because everyday is a learning experience and makes you feel accomplished when a task is complete.

Pros

Great management, great people

Cons

Seasonal

Great Place to Start

If you are young/starting fresh (again) and looking for a great career opportunity - this is your place. If you are seasoned and looking for more pay - probably not for you.Seasonal jobs mean just that - could be for a few weeks, months, or less if sales dip. Look for a full-time position. If working a seasonal position bust a$* and you'll probably be offered a place if one is available. There are plenty of opportunities for advancement but most require a major move to another city and/state - at your own expense - with no regard for COLA (local cost of living) so you must negotiate well.

Pros

Gas or auto allowances for those who drive to multiple locations not close to home, many positions offer a hiring bonus, flexible schedule (you usually set your schedule and must stick to it), Outdoor work

Cons

Driving to multiple locations, especially when gas is so expensive, gets hot, 100 plus humidity in the summer and always wet/rain in April and May, we work through both, but not with lightning, stay safe

Overall good

Overall good company to work for, days go by quickly with lots of work to do, fair pay for the merchandiser and service Rep role. The hourly district position is technically fair pay, but without a gas card the amount of travel and wear and tear on your car adds up to more than the monthly car allowance.Day to day in store work can be strenuous but very rewarding if you put the time in. Easy company to promote with if you work hard and show ambition, but is a very trial by fire/ sink or swim company,

The best part about the job was taking care of the plants and meeting new people

Altman isn't a fair company to work for, meaning they will hire outside the company for higher positions, instead of promoting within the company. They don't give raises like they should and pay someone that's been there 4 years the same as new hire. In my experience, Altman cares about the plants, not the employees taking care of them. Hours throughout the year are inconsistent. Spring time you may work 38 hours and in the fall you do good if you get 25 hours.

Pros

Working by yourself

Cons

Different times a year your hours are cut in half, and you still have to payout for your benefits not leaving much of a paycheck.

Absolutely horrible people to work for they take advantage of employees and for what you are doing they don't compensate that well

Do not work for these people! Incredibly unprofessional and the lack of training you receive is a joke. You bust your butt and no recognition is received. Extremely physically demanding and all around not worth what they pay.

Pros

None

Cons

Ungrateful and unprofessional company. Basically everything is a con

Hard work low pay

Working outside constantly its nice because you get to work alone a lot but that's also the downfall. Not much room for growth at all. Very physical work.

Awesome job, terrible management and pay

I enjoyed my time at ALTMAN’S early morning in the gardens enjoying the flowers. However, I hated the fact that once afternoon comes around you are in the beating summer sun non stop doing hard labor for extremely low pay. Then after they over order thousands and thousands of dollars of wasted plants that you struggle to throw out enough of each week after literally single handedly unloading fresh to the tables then disposing of once they inevitably die or over ship all by yourself, they lay you off. Only after you work in the sun all summer and see thousands of plants to their death begging them to re adjust their orders and adjust what comes in. Then they finish the busy season with you, they lay you off for budget cuts. This happened to everyone near by in various stores, and they essentially pay you minimum wage for the hardest part of their year as a seasonal employee promising all along that the summer is just the hard season and it makes up for it being super dead in every other season. And while under the impression you will be employed come the later months. The management was really disrespectful and poorly ran. You end up doing 100% of the laborious work while your higher ups disrespect and sabotage your day to day work regardless of how high standard you hold yourself to often times seemingly just to exercise their limited idea of personal power. But yea, the garden was lovely in the morning.

Pros

Garden, plants and flowers

Cons

Laborious work in the sun, low pay, poor management, laying you off for budget cuts after months of improper wasteful ordering

Good hours, independent work,.. that's about it.

To keep it short...you tend to have good working hours unless you're just starting. The entire culture is very much "what have you done for me lately". They pride themselves on trying to catch people slacking as opposed to creating an environment that makes people want to stay. The compensation is minimal, they will tell you that there is room to move up but unless someone quits or is fired there is no way that's happening. They do not offer raises ever. The plus side is you get to work without seeing a boss or supervisor for usually an extended period of time. Management is inadequate and prides themselves on micromanaging.

Pros

Good hours, independent work

Cons

Everything else

What is the best part of working at the company? Its a job. No overtime, 6-7 days a week, 8 to 12(changes daily) hrs a day, no incentives, supervisors give special interest to certain workers. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The equipment at the Granville facility is severely lacking and you're just expected to make it work. The day to day change of what hours they want people to work. The lack of guidance and training. Watching every week/month people leaving due to Altmans acquisition. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Could be great as a greenhouse needs to be. As of late though there seems to be a shift of micromanagement and nit picky rule enforcement all while ignoring the issues of the workers. What is a typical day like for you at the company?waiting to be told what to do as the axiom "danged if ya do and danged if ya dont" rules.
