The people make the company
OCM Communications (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXMay 22, 2019
One of the rare companies that makes one eager to go to work every day. Each day, there was something new and challenging. For a consultant, it was an experience that few contractors have. As my headline state, it is the people that make the company. In this instance, the people made it easy to become a part of the organization. And, while my contract was short-lived (only six months) I was able to make a difference and be productive, all while sharing in the corporate culture of inclusiveness. The leaders in this company fully acknowledge their teams as co-workers, not as subordinates, which makes the environment comfortable and one in which team members are encouraged to be their best.
Pros
Leadership recognizes employee efforts
Cons
Contract was too short!! :)

Good company - moving in the right direction
Talent Advisor (Current Employee) –  Houston, TXApril 8, 2019
ABS is a good company and a strong pillar in the maritime industry. I enjoy coming to work every day. It's vision to provide sophisticated digital services to it's customers is clear from the top down. ABS has an industry-leading benefits package that provides valuable programs to support it's employees health, financial security and retirement savings. ABS is one of the few companies in the country that still offers a fully funded pension plan! The medical benefits are some of the most affordable around. For a family, the medical is $245/pay period and the family deductible is just $500. ABS does not charge you extra for your spouse if he/she has coverage with their current employer.

ABS is a friendly organization and the leadership team is striving to improve communication and transparency, while promoting safety and value to it's employees and customers.
Pros
Benefits, work/life balance, communication from leadership

Best company and people I ever worked for and with.
Admin. Asst. Level 8 (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXJanuary 23, 2019
Great morale, great people, really felt appreciated there. Benefits package far superior to any other job I had worked. Overtime was paid based on 8 hour day not 40 hour week and when I received paycheck, I was paid through that day. Plenty of opportunity for furthering education and career.

Project Manager, Principal Engineer (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXJuly 20, 2018
ABS is trying to follow modern directives in order to adapt to new technologies and methodologies of new business trends.
It is still changing and is no longer the company it used to be.

World Class Leader until Management sabatoged Company integrity
Staff Consultant - Offshore Technology (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXMay 11, 2018
ABS is built on Survey. Surveyors must understand the workings and operations of equipment. Engineers are employed "to check" calculations for subject matter submitted. Not to understand or create technology.
Engineers work in the Office; Surveyors work in the field. Senior Management doesn't have a clue but listens to the voice at hand, i.e. Engineer's with no field or operational experience.
An Engineer with a science related degree can take a well control course and become the Senior Technical Advisor for American Bureau of Shipping even though he doesn't have a day of operational experience or Survey of equipment other than static pressure vessels.
ABS tends to listen to and promote incompetence and let competitors who shouldn't even be on the same platform capture the market.
Pros
All the pros contributing to good work-life balance, job security and benefits are dwindling.
Cons
Management is Clueless and convinced hiring outside yes-men will solve all problems.

ABS - Good Job, bad direction
SYSTEMS ENGINEER III (Current Employee) –  Houston, TXApril 12, 2018
Lack of vision, strategy, and process. Job changes many times a day and have no clear direction on what priorities are. Pay is OK, but very stressful. Doing way too much with way too little and laying off essential personnel while expanding other services.

Strong customer focus
Surveyor II (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXMarch 29, 2018
A typical work day was 08:88 to 18:00 with every other day off. I learned to tackle many class and flag related compliance issues. Most managers were gifted professionals with exemplary talent and character. The work culture was less of a team culture and more an by individual achievement culture. The hardest part of the job was the lack of upward mobility while the best part of the job was solving problems for the customer.

Lots of Money, Not Much Direction
Manager of IT Operations (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXFebruary 5, 2018
The IT security was lacking any coherent plan or actions. They threw money at problems hoping that a new appliance or software package would plug the latest hole in the IT field. But they lacked a clear strategic vision.
Pros
Great Pay

ABS Marine Surveyor (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXNovember 3, 2017
ABS is a great place to start your career right out of college.
However after the three (3) to five (5) year point there are more competitive options out there.
