Great way to start off a Security Career
SECURITY OFFICER (Former Employee) –  Danville, VAJuly 15, 2018
American Security is a wonderful company to work for.The management stayed on top of things and there were rarely any issues. I began working for them when they took over a site that my previous company was contracted with and they brought us in to American Security with open arms.
Pros
Pay was fair, great management
Cons
Limited hours and sites in my area

Awesome place to work coming out of the military, the pay was good. Can be very tedious and boring work, but better than going underway on a ship. Very clean working environment

A Great Place To Work
Security Guard (Former Employee) –  Greenville, SCJune 1, 2018
I enjoyed ever minute of working with American Security. Great company, great management, and great work environment. The job varied based on what site you worked, but all had a standard level of expectation on what a security officer should do. My only complaint was that I began to outgrow the initial pay, and could not see a path to negotiate. Still, I would advise them to anyone who has them as an immediate option.
Pros
Great company to work for
Cons
Pay could be better for long standing employees

Management is disconnected from its employees and their customers. Lack of presence causes tention between employees and clients causing loss of contracts and jobs for their employees

If you must work overtime, they usually don't pay. However, they have a great selective security team who are honest and work well to together. I value their work ethic too.
Pros
availble schedule

Site Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Greenville, SCMay 4, 2018
It's safe to say this is not a job for people with a family. Even with a big tax cut from the government they have yet to trickle down any of the money. Pay is awful. The starting wage should be $10.00 an hour. That's what most of their site supervisors make, and its not worth the headache you put up with. For the most part, management is nice but so unhelpful in 90% of the circumstances. They are a very "pass the buck and blame" place. Unless you asked for a raise, you can be sure you will not get one offered. And then its some few cents. And as a site supervisor, it is like pulling teeth to get anything out of your area manager. Why they don't have necessary forms stocked in their cars has always been a mystery. But "they will bring it next time", or when you have to remind them a 1000 times.

My next, and biggest, problem is with finding fill in's when employees call in sick, or need off work for vacations. When you ask your area manager for help, you are just emailed a bunch of employee numbers. And with no knowledge of their schedules and basically told "good luck". Most you call will cuss you out, not answer, or 99% of the time turn you down. Then when you ask your area manager for help, maybe he will get back to you but usually not in time. The area manger has access to their schedules and could better assist in that so you are not left holding the bag and WASTING valuable time. But as long as it doesn't disrupt their time, you are left out in the cold and usually wind up havingIts to work. So don't make plans unless you really know. It should be their job to find
more... your fill in when site employees can't work or wont work.

My advice, Walmart pays door greeters $12.00 an hour now if that's any help.

Security Officer (Current Employee) –  Anderson, SCMay 1, 2018
It's not a career position, but it's a job when you need a lot of hours and cannot perform very hard, physical labor. If an employee is not working out with one site, American Security will relocate that employee to another site that the employee may be better suited for.
Pros
Relaxed, easy, many hours.
Cons
No benefits, low pay, boring.

Sargeant (Former Employee) –  Cayce, SCApril 14, 2018
Great place to work if you need a job and if you do your best and perform well advancement will come your way. HOWEVER, your rank and pay are dictated by your site. So if you move sites there is a chance they will reduce pay and rank.
Pros
Great people, Excellent Management, Work loaf varies
Cons
Payment Structure

OK place to work if you get the right boss.
Security Officer (Former Employee) –  Greenville, SCApril 11, 2018
Typical day at work...
chasing after people to prevent them from harmful acts.
No real point in being a rent a cop when going to school to be a real officer is much more worth it. The pay is better as well.
Management...
Needs to be organized and persistent with information and payroll.
Workplace culture...
you will never know enough about job openings in other areas because they do not post them, all word of mouth.
The hardest part of the job is knowing that people are doing wrong and you can't do anything about it. All you can do is call the police.
Pros
sled certified.
Cons
Over worked and under paid.

Great place to work, If your head is in the sand.
Technical Service Representative (Current Employee) –  Fontana, CAMarch 15, 2018
I would recommend working at AMSEC. If you have no ambitions of doing anything else with your life. Most people work here for 2-15 years. The turn over is high as a new employee. Due to the lack of training in TECH SVC.

They do annual layoffs, so if you are not going above and beyond to be the best friend of management, then you can expect to be relinquished from the company.
Pros
Discounted safe, and secure position.
Cons
Failure to follow On-call after hours labor laws, Won't listen to employee input.

The continuous flow of truck drivers, contractors, delivery drivers and visitors made the time pass quickly. Drivers were friendly and pleasant to deal with for the most part.
Pros
Fast paced.
Cons
Hard to get information from the plant at times. Computer frequently went down.

Stable work, marginal benefits, skill development, but you'll never clear $35,000/year unless you make Captain
Level V Security Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Greenville, SCFebruary 25, 2018
Stable, consistent, steady, hourly work. They pay is good for non-unionized contract security, The healthcare division is the highest trained, highest paid ($12-13/ hr as a full trained officer after 12 months), and (13-14.50/ hour for a Sergeant; the high number includes a modest shift differential). If you advance to become a Lieutenant, you'll be just over $16.00, but that will take you two years at the absolute soonest and under the most advantageous of circumstances. If you are a Lieutenant at an outer site, you will be the only Lieutenant there, and you will be the site supervisor, bearing all of the responsibility and accountability for that particular medical campus (considering the responsibility and requirements of this position, you will be vastly under-paid).

This company does not operate on swing shift. If you're put on 2nd or 3rd shift, you 're stuck there unless you get yourself promoted or transferred to day- shift. The stress is incredible. It is utterly thankless, and you will have about five different bosses, each with their own agenda. You will occasionally be sandwiched between client policy and "the right thing to do." When this happens, it can be very stressful and demoralizing.

The most PTO/vacation you will ever get is 7 days (even after 7 years); you start with only 5. There are no sick days. You get health benefits, but they aren't marquis, by any means. They are pedestrian.

You will acquire a handsome package of transferable-skills, which is good-as long as you exploit this advantage for a higher-paying career, otherwise, you're skills
more... and abilities will far out-strip your compensation. You WILL acquire outstanding interpersonal skills, or you won't last at American Security. You will sleep well at night knowing that while underpaid, under-recognized, and under-appreciated, you created a great deal of value for the client, made a huge difference, and helped a great many people.

The good is that it is steady work that affords you the ability to acquire some marketable skills (computer, cameras, professional communications). They provide good uniforms. They give you the tools to look professional. You will need to buy your own: tactical boots, duty belt, flashlight, key holders, radio holder, boot socks, base-layer, hemming, dry-cleaning, and hair-cuts; however.

You will rub elbows a good deal with first responders: Police, Fire, and EMS, but you will not enjoy the respect and trust that the public confers to them. Unless you are highly polished, stellar, and are able build strong personal relationships over time with key client employees, you will be looked upon as a "security guard/night watchman."

The work has its purposes and can be great for the "right" person, but given the pay and compensation, calling it a "career" should be illegal.

Good Temp Job With Advancement Opportunities
Security Officer (Former Employee) –  Saint Paul, MNFebruary 20, 2018
Good company, good supervisors. A lot of chances to work extra hours. Supervisor had my best interests in mind and made sure I was always okay with any assignment. Led me to my next job because of clients need, supervisor said to "whatever makes the client happy is great for us" even though I worked a lot of hours for them. Pretty good people and company.
