Micromanagement
Software Engineer (Current Employee) - Remote - May 11, 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by Indeedmicromanagement, no growth, no talented individuals. usual huge enterprise project which is drowning because of its size and lots of useless meetings and managers. good for OE though, probably.

It was great until Ancestry was bought out by Blackstone
It was a great company to work for until Blackstone bought the company. After that, it became a miserable place to work. Unrealistic deadlines, workloads, and expectations from both employees and our customers.

Managers are a disaster
Content (Former Employee) - Lehi, UT - November 17, 2022
Avoid this place, very toxic work environment due to very poor team management and extreme micromanagement. If you are a great employee, hard working, driven and efficient, you will be miserable here! Terrible culture!

Good communication during remote situation
GIS Technician (Current Employee) - United States - June 22, 2022
The company knows how to communicate amid a remote work setting, and to overcome issues which arise as a result of this environment. I can't say the work was extremely gratifying, but I have nothing negative to say about them.

Feeling of accomplishment and ability to advance
Customer Solutions Associate (Former Employee) - Remote - April 28, 2022
I truly enjoyed working on the Ancestry program for almost 8 years! It was devastating when the customer service was outsourced and I lost my job! I pray that they bring the customer service back to the US. I would go back in a heartbeat!
Pros
Ability to Excel and move up!
Cons
Outsourcing Customer Service to the Philippines

Well my last manager was great
CSR - Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) - Remote - October 4, 2021
With a good manager things got better for a moment. They have you do reg customer service, work emails and work in their sister company side archives all at one. They train you and there is no pay increase
Pros
I had a decent shift
Cons
Don’t get paid enough

good place to work
Software Engineer Intern (Former Employee) - Lehi, UT - February 22, 2021
i was an intern for the summer, due to new management they only converted ~11% of interns to full time which was dissapointing. other than that, it was a great internship

Used to be much better
Public Relations Manager (Former Employee) - Lehi, UT - October 16, 2020
Once they moved major leadership roles over to San Francisco, the culture was destroyed. It then became a blame culture with leaders who were empty shells. If you're in Utah, there's much better companies to work at.

Unfriendly and Stressful
Manager (Former Employee) - Utah - September 22, 2020
One of the most unfriendly, political places I've ever worked in my career. Management is full of "yes-man" mentalities with blind-sides left and right. Product is amazing, management - not so much.

Good mission, good place to work, good people
Head of PR, North America (Former Employee) - San Francisco, CA - July 1, 2020
I really loved my time with the company. The mission was one you could get behind, the team really friendly and easy to work with, and the office a place you wanted to be.
Pros
Free snacks daily, lunch 1x a week, travel

Productive work place with work/life balance
Sr. Enterprise (API) Architect (Former Employee) - Lehi, UT - June 4, 2020
Great work culture. Very talented people. Awesome work/life balance. Hardest part of the work is the cultural difference between the 2 locations the employees are spread across. Career advancement is dependent on the location, position and your manager.

Experiencing budget difficulites.
Support Specialist (Former Employee) - Englewood, CO - March 14, 2020
I worked for an entity that was purchased by Ancestry. Received great benefits and work life balance. The company I was working for is experiencing troubled times so do your homework when applying at Ancestry. Ancestry recently restructured and eliminated about 125 jobs.

A great place to work
Senior Executive Assistant (Former Employee) - Lehi, UT - February 26, 2020
I worked at Ancestry for 4 months covering for maternity, and it was the best 4 months I'd had during my working career.
The place had a positive vibe, and the employees were very welcoming.
It was a place where people worked together, and got things done with a great attitude.
Sadly, there weren't any openings, and a few weeks later there were lay-offs, otherwise they said they would have found me work.

Excellent
IT Systems Admin Tech (Former Employee) - San Francisco, CA - January 13, 2020
The IT Team at Ancestry is wonderful! There is a huge support group and everyone helps everyone out. The team is full of knowledgable individuals that work hard and make everything run. The manager is great and always has something positive to say to his employees and offers a ton of support and listens when there are issues that arise. Overall a great place and team to work for. It was definitely very hard for me to leave this place!

Self motivated
Genealogist (Current Employee) - Orlando, FL - January 7, 2020
This job requires a person to be self motivated to complete the tasks. The majority of time is spent at home on a computer researching and compiling data.

Awesome product and great people to work with
Administrative Services (Former Employee) - Lehi, UT - December 26, 2019
Loved working for Ancestry there were some changes in leadership which impacted the culture, it just wasn't the same after that. Ancestry is a leader in DNA and genealogical services. Overall my time at Ancestry was positive.

Good people and product
Principal Data Scientist (Current Employee) - San Francisco, CA - December 24, 2019
Ancestry's roots go back to 1983. It's a genealogy company. The most loyal users are older people who love researching their family roots. We all age into that kind of hobby sooner or later.

Great place to work

Friendly people who are always working together and willing to help. Very organized and easy to learn the system and how they do things. Great perks to working there.

Relaxed Environment, but poor job security.
Senior Operations Specialist (Current Employee) - Lehi, UT - November 11, 2019
In my 7 years employment with this company, I saw many large changes in the products/services offered to customers, and internal company structure. Consistantly there were mass layoffs in many departments such as Product Development, Member Services, oand ProGenealogists. Sometimes these changess were not communicated to employees in a timely manner and forced them to scramble to find new employment. Internal company communications were not consistant. However, benefits were some of the best I've ever seen.
