Er Vet Tech in Studio City, CA
on October 10, 2021
They really lowball you on pay & tell you advancement is obtainable and increase in pay is easy once established. I feel it was a total bait & switch in that aspect. Although extra days are always available so you can make a decent living off all the overtime in exchange for any form of work/life balance. They also offer a health insurance plan that they 100% pay for, if you want to take that option, or there are other plan options, but you have to pay the difference. The plan they offer is actually pretty good. Management is fairly supportive and they treat you like adults and don't micromanage. The owners are cool too. Some doctors take a minute to warm up to you, but once you are established they have full faith in you, but all are great to work with. Coworkers are supportive and always eager to teach when you have questions. Tho I hate the term 'like a family' the team really is. Management & doctors stand by the staff when clients are abusive with a no-tolerance policy. There doesn't seem to be any room for advancement for those who want it and those who don't want it or seem to be favorites just get thrown on as leads in comparison to more experienced staff members. There is also no formal training if you don't have ER experience. You will feel like you are thrown to the wolves. So have thick skin, but know the team will help you, you just have to ask questions & speak up.

A team of excellent doctors who support their veterinary technicians. Long hours due to the nature of the emergency work. The work was satisfying. You felt you were making a difference working with a team who did their best.

High case load which can help the shift go by quickly. However the demand from employees can be daunting. There is virtually no training to speak of but most employees are likable enough. Most of the doctors are cool though the specialists can be rather overbearing as well as some of the ER doctors, expect some micromanaging from one or two. The rest of the ER doctors are great IF you're good at your job. The specialty departments are great to work in as it's a pretty cushy gig. However, if you are on the emergency staff be prepared to do everything but the fun stuff for the specialist patients including all the treatments. If you have the option avoid working emergency and apply for the specialty positions. Don't feel intimidated most have little experience also (techs). There are absolutely some techs that are a wealth of knowledge and experience but they are usually too busy to really teach. As for the managers you should watch out. They run the gambit from extremely helpful and understanding to...the opposite. Though, the original owners are really fantastic to work for, things have changed a bit. You'll need to learn quickly which members of management you can place your trust in. The pay is potentially good but that depends on how badly they need to fill the position. Be wary of them low balling you stand firm and they will pay you what you need. The benefits are actually very good here. Probably one of the best around. They do try to take care of you and some of the fringe benefits are really quite nice of them. Overall it could be a fantastic place to work but be prepared to be buried under a mountain of stress while there.
