Great place to work

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
This is a wonderful place to work, great coworkers and great management. We have any issues we work as a team to resolve it. There is always communication between staff and management. Would recommend to anyone.

Strange managers and low pay

Did not enjoy my time working at a lifeguard in APS. Pay was very low, few opportunities for advancement, and rude management. Schedules were often created extremely last minute

Excellent staff who really cares about children

Working in Arlington Public Schools has been an extremely positive experience. Staff build strong relationships with children and with each other which leads to everyone working hard to ensure programs run smoothly.

Awful school system

I grew up in Arlington, and I worked in the school system for over a decade. This is a quickly deteriorating school system from top to middle. Great teachers but absolutely awful principals and the bloated administrative and central office staff are a joke. Terrible place to work. Avoid at all costs.

Cons

Hr, administration, lack or support, bad pay, poor working conditions

Well organized school system with people who care

I loved working for APS. The superintendent was always working to listen to teachers and do what was best for students. During the pandemic, APS was a leader in virtual learning. My school had an excellent culture of respect and professionalism, with a great emphasis on SEL for students and equity.

Pros

Supportive colleagues, great technology

What is the best part of working at the company? There are many kind and caring teachers who have hung on despite the horrible administration. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Arlington parents overuse email to the point of harassment. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Toxic culture where teaching staff are told they are valued, but administrators from the school level to the superintendent constantly take actions that harm morale and make the job harder. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Try not to suffer a panic attack before opening the email in the morning. And it doesn’t get any better from there.

Great pay and benefits

Not much room to grow quickly. But nice place overall. New organizational system in place so should be good to come. Working on diversity the workforce.

Good place to work

Great facilities and families to work with. Long hours, demanding schedule during the school year. Pay could be better, but a rewarding career. Great fellow teachers.

Fun and busy summer job with easy ways to get promoted

Working here was good. This job opportunity teaches responsibility, accountability, and time-management. The work environment consists of really busy days of moving and sorting packages, from start to finish. Other days, one can mostly relax and be on their phone. It's essentially work hard play hard, if you finish all the work, you have time leftover to play.

Pros

Good pay, options for promotion, and fairly easy job

Cons

Management could be better

Good district

Superintendent is great and clearly really cares about staff. Teachers feel supported for the most part and are provided tons of resources for lesson planning.

Pros

Lots of resources, support from admin

Cons

Work life balance, workload

Productive and fun place, but don’t work here if you’re looking for full time or benefits

I enjoyed working here but you if you work at the cafeteria you don’t have access to any benefits that means no paid holidays, if you’re sick and you can’t go to work they don’t pay you for that and plus they only give you 5 hrs/day which is crazy because you have to rush in order to get things done in that amount of time

School system that is flexible to meet needs of students

I found that the district was a supportive employer and allowed opportunities for staff to provide input. In my role, the best part of the job was collaborating with colleagues and designing instruction to meet the needs of the most challenging learners. The hardest part of the job was no different than any other district...time and resources to maximize effects on learning.

Productive

The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing students succeed. The hardest part of the job is the compensation for the impact you make. Another good part are the work hours.

Pros

Great colleagues and peer support

Cons

Compensation

Complacent

You will feel complacent unless you seek a higher degree. I started very encouraged and thriving in what I was doing but then felt I was being used. A hard field to excel in unless you have a masters.

Pros

Job guarantee

Cons

No room for innovation

Teaching is always going to be stressful...

That said, working for Arlington Public Schools made me want to stop teaching. The demands from the district (especially this year) have been staggering and pay scales for newer teachers are not as competitive as neighboring districts.

Supportive Environment

I worked for 4 years supporting administrators teachers and students with special needs. This field is always challenging no matter what district you work for but in Arlington I had many supportive colleagues and managers that worked together to improve students' educational experience.
