Single, Driven, and New to Teaching is the ideal candidate
Dean (Former Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYJune 14, 2018
Ascend is a charter school network constantly opening new schools which provides for more opportunities for those who are career-driven and looking to enhance their resumes with advancement to leadership. The turnover is high in many of their schools and there may be practices that seasoned teachers may not easily adapt to. If you want a home-work balance, forget it. There are many last minute assignments and events you will be asked to attend and there are many deadlines and protocols to follow from Day 1 which starts in August of each year. Only the single, driven, and meticulously organized survived while I was there. Many with families left early in the year due to being overwhelmed. Compensation is what also keeps the teachers and leadership working there as it is excellent with great benefits.
Pros
Compensation, Benefits, Advancements
Cons
Long and unexpected work hours and last minute mandatory assignments, high turnover

Employees are not respected, valued or heard
Dean of Instruction (Former Employee) –  Bronx, NYMarch 19, 2018
Strong network team that is smart and passionate but too distanced from classrooms.
Not enough oversight of the effectiveness of school directors. Very negative staff culture, although some schools in the network seem less miserable than others.

Poor management
Dean of Instruction (Former Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYMarch 14, 2018
There are no good leaders there who can manage instruction, adults, children, and school culture. Management is very bias based on personal relationships and the leadership is inconsistent.

The network is attempting to help others; however, they lack sound structures to complete their mission and ensure all staff is treated properly.

...If you're into that sort of thing.
2nd Grade Generalist (Former Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYMarch 4, 2018
You know the deal. Typical charter with high hopes of closing the achievement gap and college for all-- at the expense of teacher well being. You aren't considered an excellent teacher unless you're spending your life at work and doing whatever it takes to see your very far behind kids somewhat caught up to grade level.
Pros
Doesn't require certification for employment
Cons
Its a charter school. Enough said.

Thriving organization
Dean of Students (Current Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYJanuary 29, 2018
This organization thrives itself in growth and gathering fresh new recruits to mold them into modern educators for the particular community they serve. I do not however feel that they are in-tuned enough with particular demographics to develop the multicultural staff into understanding the culture of their environment.

Great for novice teachers who need a roadmap
Lead Teacher (Former Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYNovember 28, 2017
Task that are asked of teachers are less than feasible as planning time is scarce. Your classroom doesn’t feel like a classroom of your own. It feels more like a scoence experiment that is constantly being manipulated by the leadership team. Feedback is given regularly to push your thinking but is Often given in the negative as opposed to a balance of positive and negative. It is tough to feel successful.
Pros
Salary, academic rigor
Cons
Staff treated like students, procedural teaching

This is a great company to work for. The only thing is you must be on point with everything in the school ensuring that the school is up to building standards at all times.

Not a healthy place to work
Staff (Current Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYOctober 18, 2017
The leaders in the schools are terrible. They do not care about the teachers or staff. They only care about how the school looks but do not realize that the advancement of the school depends on teacher retention. They treat you like kids. They make decisions and do not ask you how you feel. They switch things on you on a daily basis. And the director lies like there is no tomorrow. She speaks and spreads lies about you to others, making you look bad. She doesn't even know the parents or the kids but constantly says that "we are here for the kids".
I enjoy seeing the kids and seeing the impact I'm having on them. That's about it.
Pros
salary, children
Cons
terrible director, work load

SECOND GRADE TEACHER (Current Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYJanuary 25, 2017
It's an awesome school, if you are willing to think inside the box. If you have innovative ideas and you are an educator, they won't be easily considered.

Kitchen Supervisor (Former Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYOctober 27, 2016
Start work 7:00 am and set up breakfast for children to be delivered to the classrooms for lower school. Then prepare Breakfast to middle school to eat in lunchroom.

Start preparing and the setup for Lunch. Making sure service is on time.

Management must hire reliable people. Must be on time for work. someone that is time conscious.

making sure workers keep everything clean and sanitized.
Pros
Love making sure children eat healthy meal
Cons
Needmore support from management and staff.

Ascend is a nice school that respects teachers and places teacher happiness before all. At times the inability to push teachers beyond their comfort zone to achieve academic excellence causes the students to suffer.

Bushwick Ascend
Teacher (Former Employee) –  Brooklyn, NYFebruary 4, 2016
I cannot speak to the overall Network of Ascend as I've heard good things from the other schools. I can only talk to my experience at Buchwick Ascend. Being bilingual would be a huge benefit to working in that school as the parents and some students do not speak english well, if at all. The school as a whole lacks in culture. Staff members hardly talk to each other. There is also a huge lack of communication.
Compared to other schools I've been in the support for teachers is present. Some schools will leave a teacher to sink or swim but I have to say Ascend understands that a sinking teacher means sinking students and they do well to avoid that.
Administration...well that's a whole other story. Administrative support however is inconsistent.
