Freeway safety patrol in Cleveland, OH
on January 1, 2022
Typically I drive one of the busier routes at work. There is always something new to see or learn. It's great working alongside local and state agencies. You'll meet plenty of good and occasionally bad people from all walks of life at their best moments, and their worst. This job is not for the faint of heart. You are 100% guaranteed to see absolutely brutal car wrecks. It just comes along with the job. There is no avoiding it. Management is great regionally. My supervisors in Cleveland are amazing people, and it really is like a second family with these guys. Occasionally very unique incidents will occur that management may not understand. This can get you in major trouble if you do something that is correct, but not SOP. This is an annoyance at best, termination at worst. Always be clear as to why you did something a specific way, because it can and will save your job. The hardest part of this job is dealing with death first hand. As stated previously you're almost guaranteed to have at least a few fatal accidents in your first 6 months. The best part of this job will always be helping those in need. Wether it's changing someones tire or giving them CPR, more times than not you'll be the first one there.
Safety Patrol Oporator in Apopka, FL

The job is to provide basic roadside assistance. Similar to what you get through insurance or AAA. You have a location on or close to the highway that you jump off for your shift. Hardhat, clothes, money towards your boots, basically all the gear you need is provided. The truck you drive is a company vehicle. You basically patrol a set route for your shift. In addition to the roadside assistance, you assist in traffic control for accidents, remove debris from the road, anything that pertains to maintaining the safe flow of traffic on the highway. That said, people don't always get the scheduled they are hired for, so be REALLY clear about your availability so when they switch it up on you, you have a leg to stand on when you say you can't switch things up. They are huge in Florida, but they are only a few years old out here. Picking up contracts left and right, they are growing like crazy, but they are NOT hiring to match the growth. That's where schedules you were promised start getting pulled from under you, and you are tossed all over.Lastly, they hire MOST upper management from outside. There's a lot on the managers/supervisors/leads to do but the company itself seems to throw them to the wolves on how to figure out how to put out the fires. It's similar to retail in that there can be 150 people working, with 1 to 3 positions above a basic operator. Translation: better grease the heck out of the wheels and buddy up with someone important, or be of some class of person that earns them extra money for being promoted if you want to move up. Because busting your hump, being reliable, and keeping your nose clean ain't gonna cut it.It's a job. A dangerous one. They're growing, but that isn't carrying a whole lot of upward momentum with it, regardless of what they say. But if you like the pay even though you ain't gonna retire on it, and you don't mind dodging traffic sometimes, it's not a bad job. Not a career for the VAST majority of people though.

Safety operator in Valley Stream, NY

This job is dangerous, due to the increasingly stupid drivers on Ohio roads. Also you work almost every holiday. Increasingly being micromanaged by people who have no clue what goes on out on the roads.
Road Ranger in Orlando, FL

My schedule is very flexible. Pay is very good compared to other pay rates in Florida. If you produce for Company, you get better routes & hours. They listen to your input.
