Great place to launch your career, definitely not for everyone
Scientist (Current Employee) –  Ann Arbor, MIApril 27, 2018
Tenure at Avomeen is like dog years. You learn more in two years here than in ten at a large company. Projects are given to chemists who have ultimate responsibility to get them done. The chemist must learn everything they need to learn in order to get them done. There is no "throwing it over the wall" to some other group to do some part of it. Consequently everyone learns pretty much everything. The CEO and President have visibility into the quality and quantity of the work every chemist gets done. This is too much visibility for some people to take and they may leave quickly.

Avomeen gives many people their first jobs, which is part of the reason for significant turnover. Some people find the pace, visibility, and opportunity to be energizing. Some find it scary and should be elsewhere.
Pros
Opportunity to learn, fast paced, dynamic culture with the ability for a single employee to make a major difference, management level visibility into your work and acheivements.
Cons
management level visibility into your work and achievements

Lack of Control
Quality Assurance Specialist (Former Employee) –  Ann Arbor, MIMarch 19, 2018
In order to work at Avomeen you need to be extremely self-sufficient and able to dedicate all of your free time. The project management/ organization is completely lacking, which ends in employees working ridiculous hours and a general lack of quality/caring. Employees are worked to the bone with no appreciation. The organization's structure is constantly under re-development, which means that employees have no sense of direction or general job requirements. Training is at whim, and requires self interest in learning more, but is not regularly provided. The average tenure of staff is less than 1 year due to disgruntlement and poor work/life balance.

Quarterly free lunch

Overworked and underpaid
Analytical Chemist (Former Employee) –  Ann Arbor, MIApril 9, 2015
Employees are paid salary with a minimum 8am-5pm schedule, although this was NEVER the case (50 hr/week was most common), but in some ways this is a great place to start your career. The company hosts a wide variety of equipment and you quickly amass experience using and maintaining it. However, the equipment is purchased used and frequently down for repairs. Analysts and managers alike get to interact with clients through conference calls and on-site visits.

While I was employed at this company at LEAST one person quit per month, but many left without even having a new job lined up. The atmosphere was frequently stressful and hostile- more than once I witnessed a manager loudly criticizing an analyst in the middle of the lab. Each scientist is given five to ten projects at once and failure to churn through the stack at an acceptable speed resulted in many examples of the aforementioned public ‘criticism.’ Turnover of over-priced projects is absolutely emphasized over quality.

The owner of the company does not care about the employees. While I worked there an individual came forward with a complaint about the workload, but (aside from blaming the chemist) nothing was changed. Another chemist worked at the company for two years, was passed up for a promotion they clearly desired (it was given to someone who had been there for two months), and promptly quit. When expensive items went missing (which was common because there is NO organization) the employees were blamed. Although the presumed stolen items were always found, cameras were installed in every room of the building.

It is the BEST place to start your career, because any job afterwards seems amazing.

Hard work is rewarded, promoted in 2 years
chemist (Current Employee) –  ann arborSeptember 16, 2014
if you are willing to work hard, this is a right place for you. I got promoted in 2 years. At my last employer, hard workers and slakers were treated the same.

Most equipment is purchased used. Only once the company bought a brand new instrument. Project work is very challenging and if you cant produce there is no place to hide. Most equipment is open access, which is great for experience but causes more breakdowns and repairs downtime.

I learned more in one year at Avomeen, that 4 years at school

Great Place
Analytical Chemist (Current Employee) –  Ann Arbor, MISeptember 9, 2014
Great way to start my career in chemistry. I've went from knowing virtually nothing about my field to knowing so much in a very short time, and most likely know and understand how to use many more instruments including how to properly maintain them .

Place to Start Career
Analytical Scientist (Current Employee) –  Ann Arbor, MIFebruary 27, 2013
This is a first "professional" job for many of the associates at Avomeen. As an administration associate, one will have a chance to talk to customers on the phone. Those with a little experience or a Ph.D will be assigned to answering calls and quoting work. The laboratory staff performs instrumental analysis to solve problems in different industries.

A majority of the staff is comprised of BS, MS, and Ph.D. scientists. The company was started in 2010, and the staff is completely different since the conception. The typical 8-5 p.m. schedule with most weekends off.
Pros
new 25, 000 sq ft building ready soon, many instruments to gain experience, good for the first time scientist to learn analytical chemistry.
Cons
old scientific equipment, no stock options, and expensive insurance, short-term opportunity.

Worst job of my life.
N/A (Former Employee) –  Ann Arbor, MIJanuary 9, 2013
The owner of the company is worse than a used car salesman. While making money is important but he goes way beyond to milk the customer. This is even if the scientist give bad work which is usually what they do. The owner does not care about his employees nor does he care about lying to your face during an interview just to get you to work there. I would not recommend anybody work for Avomeen Analytical Services. You thought you were there to build something special but it was all about making the owner richer.
Cons
everything about the company.

Anonymous (Current Employee) –  Ann Arbor, MIOctober 16, 2012
This is a small company with friendly, intelligent co-workers. The management is easy to talk to, and open to new ideas.
This is highly regulated industry, so there are quite a few standard operating procedures to follow. Following the guidelines is necessary, but there is still room to practice creativity in analysis and problem solving.
