Decent benefits but not worth it
Associate Veterinarian (Current Employee) - San Diego, CA - December 8, 2023
Always pushing you to see more and more patients. When you hit their expectations they keep asking for more. Extremely money hungry while they hind behind the guise of being pet lovers. Expect you to see the same number of patients even when extremely short staffed. High turnover of para staff. Very location dependent. If you have a manager that will fight for you and your team , upper management will make their life a living h*** until they quit or the come up with an excuse to let them go. The hardest part of the job is having to deal with upper management. Difficult clients are a given regardless of where you work. Nothing enjoyable other than my team that I love
Pros
OWP for your pets
Cons
NO breaks, maybe you get to eat lunch while you were, don't allow you triage blocks for your notes, don't let you fire clients even when they are threating and abusive

I have ptsd after leaving this company. I strongly do NOT recommend anyone working here for longer than 5-7yrs. They do not value loyal employees.
Director of Veterinary Quality (Medical Director) (Former Employee) - Maryland - December 7, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The pay was competitive but they overworked me and burnout is extremely highs What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Overwork and burnout, they claim to care about mental health and wellbeing but their actions don’t align with their words What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Toxic and heavily metrics/money driven What is a typical day like for you at the company? Extremely high volume, high pressure, lack of actual care for the people doing the work in the field

Good people, but they don't promote from within like they say they do...
Talent Acquisition Specialist (Former Employee) - Vancouver, WA - December 5, 2023
Good people, but they don't promote from within like they claim they do. Also, the culture is kind of gossipy and there is often way too much corporate red tape to get things done. The benefits are pretty good!

High pressure, toxic environment
Veterinary Assistant (Former Employee) - Bellingham, WA - December 4, 2023
I'm sure it's all clinic dependent, but this is the most toxic workplace I have ever seen. There is a lot of pressure to see as many patients in this little time as possible which does seem to compromise patient care. This is representative of many Banfield locations. There are a lot of good people trying to do right by the patients, but there is just so much pressure to see more, more, and more.

Loved the pets and my co-workers…that’s it.
Customer Service Coordinator (Former Employee) - Myrtle Beach, SC - December 1, 2023
Very stressful job, but most veterinarian offices are. You have to have thick skin to work here, the customers will put you through the fire. The animals and medical staff are amazing, upper management not so supportive. I cried in my car at lunch almost daily due to high levels of stress and anxiety from the customers. Management rarely backs up the workers when getting yelled at or cussed out by clients, which happens sometimes daily.

Favorites and no balance
CSC (Former Employee) - San Diego, CA - November 30, 2023
Run not walk away from this place. They only care about numbers and slam the doctor's schedules. Management has favorites and it SHOWS. We are open 7 days a week and were told no set schedules, yet one favorite worked Monday-Friday 8am-3:30pm. They throw you to the wolves and instead of listening to their employees, they take every online review as truth. They only care about making money

Zero Flexibility, Room for Growth, or Care
Practice Manager (Former Employee) - Greenville, SC - November 29, 2023
In my time there as a PM, I truly thought I lost my love for veterinary medicine. The day to day turned only to metrics and zero regard for patient care.

Nice place to work
CSC (Former Employee) - Jacksonville, FL - November 28, 2023
I enjoyed my time working there. It was fun playing with the pets when they arrived and upon leaving. Getting to know the regular clients was the best part.

Production driven vs care
Practice Manager (Former Employee) - Washington, DC - November 26, 2023
This company cares more about production delivered than the quality of the care provided or the people providing the care. They say that they are about culture but do not put any actual resources into making the culture any better. Every announcement is centered around increasing production and hitting numbers. I thought I was in the pet care industry. I understand that productions is required to keep the lights on, but there can be a balance. There is also a lack of support from upper-level management.
Pros
Did not lay off during the pandemic, nice benefit options for associates
Cons
Training, little support from management, growth potential is limited

Jobs at Banfield Pet Hospital
We could be great but we aren't
Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist (Former Employee) - Greenfield, WI - November 22, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? poor management, do literally everything they tell you not to do-gossip, scroll on your phone (they will literally go around and show you memes and things they plan to or already have bought). Doesn't train staff appropriately and then argue with them about how they aren't doing it right. All management are Friends so if you have a problem with one the others well turn there head. Get out of vet med its a dying field, trust me. Go look at vet tech Facebook groups there all sad and depressed. Most if not all are struggle to make ends meat, are working multiple jobs and cant even afford there own animals needs at time. vet med Overall 0/10 banfield 0/10 What is the most stressful part about working at the company? employee turn over rate, because a good portion is looking for jobs. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Stressful, i need 30 characters minimum What is a typical day like for you at the company? Get in and be talked down to and know theres really nothing you can do about it, until you find a new job

I enjoy my fellow employees and we all care but no one feels the company care back
Veterinary Technician (Current Employee) - Vero Beach, FL - November 21, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Pay and benefits. Its difficult to find veterinary practices in Florida that offer benefits. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Everything is about the numbers and wellness plans. They don’t seem to actually care about the clients/ pet connections. All the medications and supplies are only ordered through one company. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The other employees and the doctors care about the patients. Those who have been there for a while feel helpless to make changes. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Get in as many patients and surgeries especially dentals as possible and hurry up and get them done and out. Sell plans.

Official response from Banfield Pet Hospital
December 7, 2023Hi there. Thank you for taking the time to share—it's sincerely appreciated. Listening and learning from current (and former) Associates about their work (and team) experience is an important part of the feedback process. If at any point you feel comfortable sharing with your P&O business partner—please know that you can reach out any time. Additionally, the Ombudsman is there to support you as well. The latter is completely confidential. Thanks again.
Okay company
CSC (Former Employee) - Woburn, MA - November 20, 2023
Pretty good company to work for perks are good great health insurance. Corporate seems to not care as much but day to day co workers make it worth it. Pay could be better

Alright
Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist (Current Employee) - Aventura, FL - November 19, 2023
Banfield is not a bad company to work at, but it definitely still has its things. Management seems to be given to anyone, training isn’t done too well. The benefits, inclusivity, diversity, internal growth that is done and shown is great, but there are still things that need to be worked on. Such as listening to your employees on issues that they have and taking it more into consideration to helping out their own and the company to become better. Not basing it so much on money, but more so on the care of pets for real. Being able to get discounts and free healthcare plans for (3) pets is a great perk, but these things need to be looked at more.

It was ok
Client Service Representative (Former Employee) - Woodstock, GA - November 18, 2023
There were lots of Rules because it’s corporate and inflexible but also pays differential pay and raises quarterly or so without asking. Overall it was ok.

Loved my team, but most left due to understaffed, overworked and underpaid
CSR - Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) - Frisco, TX - November 17, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The team, NOT management or the Mars corporation What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Under staffed, over worked, under paid! All they want is $$$. Bring them in, but don’t have enough staff to properly care for the animals! What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Very stressful! Not enough staff to care for the amount of pets they want seen each day. They run out of medical supplies and constantly are calling other Banfields to barrow or trade. Sometimes pulling Dr.’s from one hospital to another otherwise there would be no Dr. Can’t retain staff! What is a typical day like for you at the company? Not enough staff so clients and their pets can be neglected

Completely disappointing
Shift Lead Veterinary Assistant (Former Employee) - Mount Pleasant, SC - November 17, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? They only positive I have to say is that if you have no experience and are looking to just get your foot in the door and learn some basic skills they will give you a chance but trust me when I say you probably won’t want to stay long so suck up all that knowledge and find yourself a clinic that will value you! What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Benefits are about the only thing great about this company. They over work their doctors with half trained para staff and have no loyalty to their employees. Consistently hire new people with no experience at higher rates the current employees and refuse increases when it is brought to their attention no matter how great your performance. Forget about promotions because leadership insists on hiring managers from outside of the company and then expecting those that the passed up for promotions to train the new managers. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Extremely toxic environment, leadership pretends to care and sends all kind of emails about how mental health and work life balance is essential but doesn’t zero to actually ensure this is actually being support led in hospitals What is a typical day like for you at the company? Expectations of 20-22 pets per day sometimes with only one doctor and minimal para support. With 4 of those appointments being surgeries

Good entry level growth and DVMs care
Veterinary Assistant (Current Employee) - Sacramento, CA - November 16, 2023
Banfield has helped me build my basic fundamentals and given me the opportunity to build. As someone who started my career here I can say they really gave me the opportunity. The push to sell OWP's is a little ridiculous.

Toxic workplace
Veterinary Assistant (Former Employee) - Denver, CO - November 16, 2023
Bad management the company only cares about themselves overworked most of the time and coworkers are entitled. Would not recommend as they don’t even offer great benefits

Depends on your hospital location/culture there
RVT/ Shift Lead (Former Employee) - Upland, CA - November 16, 2023
I worked at a location that was terrible at first, then there was some staff changes and I ended up loving my coworkers. Clients are crazy, it is like that everywhere. I had a hard time moving into shift lead, and wish that I was recognized earlier in my career. I hated the health insurance they offer. You do get 3 free wellness plans for your pets, so that is great and 50% Royal Canin or Hills pet food, so that was a huge perk. It does get very corporate-y often and they do prioritize bringing in the money by packing the schedule and sending home staff to where every day was a different struggle. Very stingy about overtime. Work schedule is different shifts and days every week, always changing, lead to ease of getting days off if you requested about 4w ahead of time, but made it hard for me to structure my personal life with the randomness of everything.
