Good company to work for if you are willing to travel.

Good company with great people. The job's are large scale and take collaboration between Departments to achieve success. Average pay scale and decent benefits package. The people are what make this company worth working for.

Pros

Good pay and great people

Relocation necessary every few years

So many standard perks are missing!

As I was updating my profile information, it dawned to me that many of the 21st century's standard job benefits and perks are missing at Bechtel! Including flexible work hours after child birth, remote work flexibility, on-site gym, cafeteria, company sponsored team volunteering hours, etc. etc. missing!

Pros

Good base salary.

Cons

Salary is where it ends. Everything else including company culture, management, career progression - all very much in the negative.

Disappointed with this company

Once I found out that Bechtel does not give vacation, 401k or paternal leave following childbirth I started looking elsewhere. This company is the poster child why America's business class is failing. They even went out of their way to specifically put an exception clause with their insurance carrier thereby not covering any developmental issues or mental health issues. This would have been nice to have for my 3 year old with low spectrum Autism. Little gets accomplished in meetings. For the most part meetings consist of a room full of egos trying to prove to the other they are smarter than the next guy. Weeks later the same problems persist. Promotion from within happens only if you are part of the "good old boy system" or your husband/wife works for the company. Great talent on lower level jobs is completely overlooked. As stated before, unless you are part of "corporate" you get 5 days of PTO per year. God forbid you have to use those days throughout the year, you will be left with no paid days when corporate shuts down over Christmas/New years break, leaving you broke going in to the new year. This company is a direct representation of America. Those on the higher levels are rolling in money while the other 90% of people working for Bechtel are barely getting by. Complete Atrocity.

Pros

You have a job

Cons

Too many to list.

Wasnt to bad of a place

The job leadership was promoted mostly based on who they knew not what they knew. other than that it was not a terrible place to work at all. The pay scale was pretty good for the job.

Good company

Pay and benefits were excellent at this company and included tuition reimbursement for graduate programs and other continuing education. Bechtel is good at building things and young engineers are giving opportunities to work on good projects.

A day a Bechtel - Meetings, Meetings and more Meetings

Very little flow of overall strategy from the top down. Discretionary time is expected. Can't telework. We meet just to meet - no value add. I would say the hardest part of my job is managing global teams because Bechtel employees reside all over the world. I enjoy the challenging areas of my job - however they are few and far between.

Pros

Great Benefits, 401K plan

Cons

No teleworking

Tradition-driven family atmosphere building exciting projects

An over 100- year old company with a very established culture. Very focused on doing projects the Bechtel way. People stay in this company, sometimes for 20, 30 and even 40 years. People show a strong commitment to the company, which often has a family-like atmosphere. There are many employees who have a parent that was also a Bechtel employee. This gives the culture continuity over generations. People can build strong personal relationships with colleagues, especially when working on construction sites. People also take pride in the company's long history of well-recognized projects such as the Hoover Dam. But the downside of this is a sometimes-insular feeling resistant to change, even to the point of arrogance. The strong traditions deeply rooted in construction work give the company a long-held belief in a command and control model for management. Offices tend to be run like construction sites, so people are expected to burn long hours. There's pressure to take work home at nights and on weekends. The company does have choices of schedules and a good benefits package that can make the company an attractive workplace. If considering work at Bechtel, which can be rewarding work contributing to a large, global construction company; first look at your fit within the culture. There's an image of the desired Bechtel worker behind each job opportunity.

Pros

Flexible schedules, project work at different locations, relationships with colleagues

Cons

Resistance to change, tight work culture

Depends on the Project

The overall work environment is relatively laid back, though there are often times periods of stress depending on the construction project's demands and requirements. Overall, the pay and benefits are quite good.

Pros

Full benefits, flexible schedule, good pay, paid holidays, plenty of overtime available

Cons

Difficult to implement modernized processes and procedures

Once a great company, now struggling to compete.

Bechtel seems to be on a downward spiral, and focused on unsustainable natural gas and airport-related work. The company clams to be committed to sustainability, and renewable energy, including Nuclear. However, my assessment is that most of these claims are "just talk" and for the purposes of generating positive PR. The Sustainability Group only as a couple full-time staff. The CEO apparently wants to transform Bechtel into a Project Management and IT company, at the expense of engineers and scientists. The Corporate Headquarters in Reston, VA is not a fun (quite depressing) place to work. The Frederick, MD office is very much missed by employees.

Pros

Competetive Salary

Cons

Very little freedom and room from advancement unless you fit a mold.

High stress and disciplined working atmosphere.

We were a part of the Human Resources Department. *Reviewed the relocation policy with the employee and answered questions and let them know the time lines and services Bechtel would be providing. *Scheduled services to assist the employee with their relocation. *Notes made on each conversation *Review expense reimbursement requests before submitting them to accounting. *Phone conversations with the HR Specialists of the different divisions or government accounts for updates on employees and resolved any problems. *Follow up with the employees on each phase of their relocation to make sure all services were provided to get them settled as quickly as possible. *Team meetings with supervisors Learned to work thoroughly and quickly. Workplace culture was very disciplined Hardest part of the job was dealing with some of the management. Most enjoyable job was when employee's relocation was complete and they were settled.

Pros

Great compensation

Cons

Change in management incurred some problems

Great Place to Work But Needs to Win More Work

The company is a good place to work as long as new work keeps coming in. In the main offices, engineers work primarily on design and either move between projects or work on staff. Engineers can relocate to site when construction on a project starts. The company encourages you to try out different roles (sectors and functions), however it may be difficult at times to go into the roles that you want. They may ask that you fill a role for a need that they really need at the time. They also prefer that you remain mobile. In fact, if you are willing to relocate you would have pretty good job security. If you are tied to one location, it may be difficult to stay in one role or office for a long time. The benefits for the company are very good with 401K matching, HSA plan, and a wellness program.

decent pay but very unfair rules

The Pay is pretty good for the area im working in and most the management is fair, the only bad thing i can say is that the rules for the project im on are ridiculous. They want you to clock in an hour to two hours early to be at a "Start" meeting and not get paid for that time. Then they will find any reason to write you up and fire you to avoid paying out the completion bonus.
